Teachers on Facebook: Do you think it's okay for teachers to communicate with students on social networking sites like Facebook?
| 41.46% | Yes | |
| 58.53% | No |
Comment: I do not think that any interaction between teachers and student is appropriate as far as social networking sites are concerned. If there needs to be conversation between the teachers and students, this should be done through a school mandated and monitored email account or web site. from Pensacola, FL by Steve
Comment: This could be negative or positive as with many other situations. However, it is up to the individual which route they decide to take. Taking the negative, one will have no choice but to accept the consequences. Abusing FB will definitely leave a paper trail back to the individuals. from Pensacola, Fl by Tomeka
Comment: I do think it is a good idea if they set up alternative ways to communicate with their students in a positive manner. I mean that if the communication is related to school subjects. In a positive manner, this could be set up to continue receiving instructions during periods of school closings due to weather conditions, such as hurricaines. Schools have set up some websites but they are not very effective and are difficult to access, etc. Facebook could be a platform to provide information for the class during periods of school closings. I am aware of the "friends" policy but schools are not set up during periods of bad weather. Facebook could be utilized in a positive manner to update students, keep up with class homework, etc. The school system should look for ways of providing instructions during these periods using the internet instead of using old teaching techniques that are not up to date. Perhaps they should look at the positive aspects of teaching instead of creating more problems. It is the duty of the school system to instruct and to find ways of communicating during these blackout periods. Think positive and utilize all the tools available instead of staying behind with the times. If you don't want to use Facebook, then find alternative methods and systems that work. The system you have now is not effective. from Daphne, AL by Rossana
Comment: "The school district says" what a load. The district is a body of idiots that hide behind doors and violate every law there is and want to remain (under the table)from wince they came and claim "school district" not the INDIVIDUALS who comprise that board. Fire the superintendent and the school board and lets quit putting illegals in office who dont know what the constitution stands for. What kind of idiots like this are proliferated in the system and are supposed to be teaching AMERICANISUM AND RIGHTS. Teahers and students in Santa Rosa (remember the Frank Lay crap) you need to cull now.Remember this at election time guys. from Pensacola,Fl by Flower
Comment: yes i think its ok over all but i would not do it in such a private way if i were a teacher. the teacher should either make a page just for talking to the students so they'll be able to keep that seperate from their private life or the school needs to fix one up so teachers can access it to converse with students. from Pensacola by Robert
Comment: there are so many ways that if social networking is allowed between student and staff, many regretful feelings will follow as this is an open door for ill- motive individuals to lure someone into a possibly fatal situation. It should be understood with the staff and students that communcation off campus should be done through the students guardian or within school confines. from pensacola Florida by debbie
Comment: TEACHERS SHOULD STAY IN THE CLASS ROOMS AND NOT BE A "FRIEND " ON SOCIAL NETWORKS. by RUFUS
Comment: Of course it's ok..the times are-a-changing. A good teacher will use it to his or her advantage to further teach...a bad teacher will find a way to be bad with or without it. from Gulf Breeze, Florida by Tommy
Comment: Certainly not!! Is your doctor your "friend" on Facebook? How about your CPA or your dentist? The trouble with many teachers is they do not elevate themselves to the level of a true professional. I can say that, I have taught for 33 years. from Fort Walton Bch,FL by Patricia
Comment: There is no reason for teachers to communicate with individual students on SOCIAL networks. I think it crosses an ethical line - they communicate just fine through email and the county website. Communicating as "friends" on facebook and other sights just is an invitation for trouble. from Gulf Breeze by J
Comment: I am a high school teacher and college instructor and I believe that there is absolutely no reason that any educator should allow students into their personal lives through social networking or by any other means. To do so would be completely unprofessional. It's different if the school has a Facebook page (as many do) and communicates school-related information in this capacity. This should be the only circumstance where teachers and students would have a reason to communicate through social networking sites. from Pensacola, FL by Rosie
Comment: As it is, there is too much student/teacher interface (i.e., statutory rape, abuse of power, etc.) The last thing a kid needs is a teacher on his/her computer. I think that unless the communication deals with some type of computer lesson/class, teachers should 'leave well enough alone'. from Mary Esther, FL. by Tom
Comment: It's very important that parents are aware/on top of their childrens school work on a daily basis, I do not think this impersonal communication is a healthy way for our educators and parents to guide our future leaders. from Molino, FL by Marjorie
Comment: Teaching is a profession. Teachers should always maintain a student/teacher relationship. Technology should not compromise professionalism. Social network for instructional purposes only. from Pensacola/FL by Plummie
Comment: I don't see the harm in it. Its a social network to socialize ! The teacher is responsible for the his/her self outside of school and not at work at home. from Pensacola, Florida by T.C.
Comment: NO. it is not ok. The line is too thin, and easily crossed. They are supposed to be teachers, not their friends. from pensacola fl by sue
Comment: I think this is a matter to be left between parents and teachers on an individual basis. But if a teacher is a family friend or the mesages pertain to homework or upcoming event reminders, should not be anything to worry about. So it should be left at a perental discretionary level, as facebook members under 18 are supposed to have parental permission anyway, according to the terms of service agreement. from Milton, FL by Walter
Comment: Teachers should only communicate with students in the classroom. from holt, fl by G
Comment: My first instinct was no, but you need to reach out to some kids that my use this as a tool for learning. The times have changed and sometimes we need to keep up with the changes. I would always prefer a face to face learning but if it works why not. from milton fl by roberta
Comment: No, I don't think it is okay. It crosses professional boundaries that exist between students and teachers. Things can and will go too far. from Pensacola, FL by Julia
Comment: How else I'm gonna hook up wit teacher than mySpace? We got to know were the party at so we can act a fool and crunk wit the purple drank! by DeQuasia Jones
Comment: Extra communications with teachers may disadvantage those students who cannot, or do not communicate with their teachers outside of school. In the fifties and sixties, they were called "teacher's pets". Grades were affected. from Pensacola/FL by J.
Comment: NO from Niceville by Bill
Comment: To each his/her own. Personally, and being a teacher, I wouldn't have anything to do with students on social network sites or anything else outside the classroom. You are only asking for the prospect of failure. from Navarre, Fl by HB
Comment: You Know kids should just be more respectful. At the same time they should both be able to take criticism from one another or it just wont work. and who says you cant use more than one account. I believe in good parent-teacher-student relationship from P'cola, Fl. by Luke
Comment: No teachers should communicate with students on online social networks of any kind. from Denver Co by Cyndi
Comment: It's a great way to communicate. from Gulf Breeze by Pam
Comment: It is inappropiate and unprofessional. There should always be a desire to avoid all appearances of evil. from Cantonment by T.
Comment: I think the teacher/student relationships should stay strictly educational, not personal. Facebook can be a great way to help with homework and other school related issues, such as bullying in the class. There's no perfect solution to anything, but to say NO not at all would be foolish. from Lillian, AL by Dee
Comment: It's really an odd question when you think about it. Can teachers communicate with students outside of Facebook? Yes they can. The real question should be what are the guidelines and limits for proper communications between teachers, students and parents? Technology will continue to influence and alter how we communicate. from Navarre by A
