Parade Funding: Do you believe local governments should help fund parades?

50% Yes
50% No

Comment: The 80 thousand for parade support is only a drop in the bucket compared to the millions the City is willing to pay to build a ballpark for the Pelicans and a Maritime Museum for the downtown special interest groups. from Pensacola by Rick

Comment: Give the money to schools. Let the drinkers pay for their own partying. from Gulf Breeze FL by Frank

Comment: Parades greatly contribute to the quality of life in the community. They also bring large crowds downtown, with the potential to help stores, restaurants, etc. What a dull place this would be without them. from Cantonment by Deano

Comment: Funding for patriotic events, such as 4th of July, Veteran's Day, etc. deserve city funding. Others, especially religeous events such as Christmas, St. Patrick's Day and Mardi Gras should be funded by the organizers, from Pensacola, FL by Morton

Comment: What better way to draw people downtown!! Isn't that what we want? from Pensacola by Mark and Mary

Comment: Yes the city should pick up the parade funds. The parade organizers simply can not cover the cost. The parades generate good money for the bussiness downtown as well as the events are one of the last events left for familys to enjoy in the cty of Pensacola. from Pensacola Fl by Audrey

Comment: As a member of the Krewe of Warriors, I know first hand how much money participants already pay. Besides our annual dues, we purchase all of our own give-aways which on average is $1,000 a year to cover all parades. That doesn't count the multiple fundrasers that we hold and pay for out of our member's pockets. The City of Pensacola is complaining about $80,000? Perhaps they can ask the County to help out. Participants cannot afford anymore money. Imagine no parades downtown? It sounds like the City Manager prefers a new ghost town. Cheers to the Mayor, he has vision!!! from Gulf Breeze, F: by Lisa

Comment: This is about community morale, and that IS the City's responsibility. Give the people something to do to bring up thier spirits in these trying times, or the people will find other things to do with thier time, not always in a positive manner, especially if they are displeased with their city officials! Example, graffiti may no longer be found only at graffiti bridge. from Pensacola by Cindy

Comment: NO! for years (hidden tax abuse) fund these non productive events. Nothing is free... and LEO have more important things to monitor than watching a parade and getting paid for it. Theres an old saying ..If you want to watch a movie ...DONT INVITE ME AND ASK MY TAXES TO PAY FOR IT. Corruption. Al Coby knows the game plan and dont want any part of it. Good man! from Pensacola,Fl by D

Comment: ...and the next thing to go will be the Blue Angels on Pensacola Beach. I'm sure they're already discussing it. First they steal the money, then then take the prayers, then they take the joy then the freedom. I know who won't get my votes next election! from pensacola, fl by D

Comment: The city could charge an entry fee for any float that wants to participate to help cover the cost of set up and clean up. from Pensacola florida by Eric

Comment: I feel parades are an important part of the community, part of the soul of a community. I looked so forward to them as a child, they were so lively and fun. Pensacola does not need to cut off more of their soul, they need to gain some that is not related to just drinking, night life and babes on the beach. from Pensacola, Fl by Karen

Comment: aren't these the very same folks who constantly vote for a smaller government? more responsible spending in government? believes in "smaller" government? well, it sure does sounds like they are for all that as long as their piece of the pie is not taken away. besides, all these parades pretty much represent a festival of drunks for drunks. the organizations themselves are racially segregated and have separate kings and queens...one group openly mocks native americans! 1/2 a million people? where did they get that figure? out of the sky? no i say it is in the line of less than a 100,000 but then again these folks don't know how to count that high or will use a imaginary figure to fit their means. the way i see it, the parade organizers and the businesses downtown are the only ones who benefit finacially...want to make the downtown area vibrant and not have to rely on these freeloaders...make the downtown just like bourbon street! now that will attract visitors and locals! from p'cola fl by h

Comment: Haven't we got enough problems with trying to figure out where our money is going now? Funding of parades (though a generous gesture) means that the money going to frivilous activities, could be otherwise spent toward a necessity of life. (i.e., do we fund a parade or pay for repavement of the potholes in the street?) Remember the old saying: Business before pleasure? Remember that before committing taxpayer dollars on things. from Mary Esther, FL. by Tom

Comment: Get rid of the barricades. Pensacola is not big enough for that kind of crowd control, that would save money! from Pensacola by Chris

Comment: We see a lot of visiters who come to celebrate with us in these parades. They buy rooms, food and shop while they are here. It is a win win situation. Let's be real and figure out how to save money in other places! from Pace, Florida by Mary

Comment: I think the city should pay some of the cost ,but I also think the workers could also volunteer their time to help with the cost after all if Pensacola doesn't have anything to bring people here they won't need any workers now will they . from Pensacola ,FL. by Robert

Comment: Fund the many parades that entertain folks all during the year vs the one event that costs local government more than all of them combined, the New Years Eve celebration. That is only one night, benefiting only a few with no downtown businesses open to benefit from the huge crowds that parades attract. from Pensacola, FL by Robin

Comment: Parades bring people/dollars to down town which is good for downtown shops, resturants, and the city. The city manager should look for other more wasteful spending which I'm sure there is. from Crestview by Steve

Comment: Foreclosures, unemployment, poverty levels, I would believe there are other things the taxpayers could pay for with $80k than a parade. How about fund raisers?

Comment: Thousands of dollars are being cut from education and emergency services and we're worried about funding parades? I'd rather have a couple of more teachers on staff or two more EMS crews on the road than fund another chance for people to get drunk in public and act stupid.

Comment: The parades are something the whole community gets involved with and it brings business to the down town area. Cutting the funding would be a huge mistake. from Gulf Breeze Fl by Sam

Comment: The Christmas Parade is the only venue that has all the local bands, out-of town bands, balloons, plus the Blue Angels. There are over 3000 kids and youth involved with just this one parade. Does Pensacola offer any other events for these groups to be seen close-up? from Pensacola, FL by Bruce

Comment: The groups should be funding their own through fund raising. City or county budgets are needed for more important things. from FWB, FL by Jon
