Hurricane Housing: Do you like the idea of housing hurricane evacuees in foreclosed homes?
| 35% | Yes | |
| 65% | No |
Comment: No, we as taxpayers would end up being responsible for the damages. I would bet people would not be grateful and take care of the foreclosed home since they know it is temporary, leaving the rest of us to foot the bill. from milton,fl by patrick
Comment: Absolutely! Not only is the application of this common sense solution appaling to the evacuees, but it is a benefit to the community as a whole by keeping families closer together and allowing for the unity a disaster brings to encompass those most affected. from Pensacola, Fl by Susan
Comment: Some people have no where else to go and due to the economy may not be able to afford to get out of town. We should do whatever we can to help them because it's stressful enough when a hurricane comes through. from Pensacola, Florida by Lizzi
Comment: I think it is great to keep hurricane evacuees close to home. But why is it that the government has enough money to help hurricane evacuees that have lost there homes. But not enough to help people from foreclosing on their homes. Something to think about. from Pace by Ona
Comment: This is a very bad idea! I worked for FEMA after Ivan and I saw first hand how some people treated the FEMA travel trailers and mobile homes. I saw many of the FEMA travel trailers and mobile homes damaged by people who just do not care. There are too many people who will do the same to foreclosed homes. Then the tax payers will be stuck with the bill to repair these homes. from Pensacola by Brian
Comment: The idea is right but some controls must be placed on those using the housing. Property damaged responsibility of the users must be addressed
Comment: If you want the foreclosed houses vandalized and destroyed, this is a good idea. Remember what the "evacuated" people to the FEMA trailers they were allowed to use? from Pensacola, Florida by David
Comment: The last I looked at it, a foreclosed home returns to the lending institution for resale. I think that opening up these private properties for temporary relief are fully up to the owners. I have no objection to a local community developing a list of homes that people would like to make available for such use, but do not think the government has any business in it. At some point in time, we are going to have to revert to the American idea of individual responsibility or we will surely disappear from history. from Pensacola / FL by Rick
Comment: Oh what a wonderful idea...except..look at the damage the evacuees did to the hotel/motels..almost demolished them. Who will pick up the tab for restoring them. from Pensacola, FL by Georgia
Comment: I think it's a bad idea. Many, not all but many abused the FEMA housing last time. You'd never get them out of the free house. from Pensacola, FLa by Rob
Comment: This "service" is NOT the responsibility of the state nor federal government ... it is more "nanny" government. Why should taxpayers continue to bail out people who clearly don't have enough sense to build a home on safe ground ? Why can't the gvmt keep the "evicted" family in their own home ? from Milton by Louise
Comment: This idea is ridiculous! Does anyone remember how many travel trailers and mobile homes were trashed too badly to sell? The evacuee parks would certainly be easier to monitor and the utilities be less expensive. from Pensacola. FL by Shirley
Comment: At what point do we assume resposibility for our selves? How long are we going to support hurrican victums? This plans looks like we displace one family who could no longer pay their mortage and replace them with another that we will pick up the tab for. from lillian ala by bill
Comment: Sounds like a workable solution, but full of problems and issues and hurdles. Who pays to make it habitable? Who pays the damages wrought by the evacuees? Or is FEMA using public need to take possission? But SOMETHING needs to be DONE. Stop talking, JUST DO IT - NOW!!!! from Pensacola FL by Ed
Comment: NO I don't, they will tear up the house like people tore up Houston. People don't appreciate things they don't have to work for... look at what they did to hotels FEMA paid for. Many had to be torn out and redone. No, no, no -- don't give what you can't afford to lose. from pensacola, fl by denise
Comment: You could be putting criminals in good neighborhoods. Who wins there? The criminal. from Pensacola by Karen
Comment: I think this is a great idea and hope is works out. Instead of a home being vacant it should be used and it might help those who are evacuees to get back on their feet. from Pensacola/FL by Cindy
Comment: By all means no! It's great that the fed's care about us, but what they aren't paying attention to is the fact that we have people who would trash these homes and there are people who would use the home for drug deals, and we all know it's Not what we need! We know it happens so why put ourselves in the situation. from Pensacola,Fl by Victoria
Comment: I can see people running from another state that a hurricane did not happen in and abuse the system for free anything.Fema has shown they are not good at anything but paperwork and they cant do that right. You have slum dogs waiting to move in and claim they lived here. from Pensacola,Florida by D
Comment: Why let homes sit idle? I say "use them" if necessary. from Pensacola, FL by j.
