Tobacco Lawsuit: Do you agree with the jury's award of 30-million dollars to the widow of a long time smoker who died of lung cancer?

11.11% Yes
88.88% No

Comment: No people know what the effects of smoking are now adays and they knew back then what the effects where. It is that persons choice to somke and they have a choice to stop. It is not the cigareet companies faults they put waring labels on the packs. People need to stop being so sue happy. from Milton, Fl by Tracy

Comment: No , I don't agree, did anyone twist his arm to buy the tobacco? I doubt it.. I don't smoke and never have, both my parents did and I guess that made me not want to. This lady knew he was smoking and there were labels that warned against cancer,, that is the chance you take when you smoke.... from Brewton, AL by Teresa

Comment: The amounts of these settlements are atrocious. Those of us who smoke know the risks and may very well be addicted but it is not just the tobacco companies at fault. I'm sure one would find he had an addictive personality as well. from FWB, FL by Vicki

Comment: What in the world is this crazy country coming to. There are so many aids for you to quit smoking, and god knows everyone in the world has known the risks you take when you smoke. Its just so stupid for a jury to make an award like that. from pensacola fl by jim

Comment: habits can be broken I did for twenty two years. no one forced him to buy their product. no one forced him to smoke, people make choices some good some bad.people die everyday from lung cancer who have never smoked from pensacola by jim

Comment: It is amazing what people will sue over even when they know it was their own or loved ones choice to do what they did. Maybe I need to sue Kraft Foods for making Oreo's taste so good and making me fat. Even though it is my choice to sit here on the couch and eat them! from Crestview by Concerned

Comment: NO, People were warned many years ago about the harm of smoking. I was a smoker and quit in the mid 80's. It is a shamne he came down with cancer, but many that smoke don't get cancer and some do. You gamble with your life if you continued smoking and were told of the consequences. Can't see how a jury would side with a smoker. from Navarre, Fl. by C J

Comment: No way do I agree with this. As a past smoker myself I know that there has been warnings on each and every pack that said smoking may be hazardous to your health. Just another frivolous lawsuit that will cost us all in the long run. from Pensacola, Fl. by Rick

Comment: My husband and I are both smokers, we were when we met in 1961 and are still smoking..neither of us would even consider filing suit. Everyone knows its a nasty habit, but continue anyway. Its a personal choice..always has been and always will be. from pensacola by georgia

Comment: Ridiculous from Pensacola,FL by John

Comment: Tobacco, like alcohol, is used on a voluntary basis. No one holds a gun to an individuals head and makes him/her use these products. What is next, suing alcohol companies for a persons use of it and damages their liver? from shalimar,fl by jim

Comment: That is insane. There have been Surgeon General Warnings on tobacco for how many years? Anyone with above a 3rd grade education level knows the dangers of smoking... insane, what people will do these days for $$...no amount of $$ will bring back the husband anyway. from Pensacola by Shannon

Comment: I doubt that anyone held a gun to his head and made him smoke, my mom was a smoker and said I brought all this suffering on myself. People need to take responsibility for things they do. from fairhope, al by marion

Comment: It was his choice to smoke. Anyone can break the habit if they want too.

Comment: Big tabacco today big boose tomorrow. Who will the lawyers sue after that? No one forces these people to smoke or drink, what's next? When the world ends nothing will left but cockroaches and sue happy lawyers. from Pensacola by Punkin

Comment: Yes, the tobacco companies have deceived the public and have caused many deaths. Time to pay up!!! With the price of cigarettes, this money will be a drop in the bucket for them. from Milton/Fl by Al

Comment: I don't know his actual story but it doesn't matter. People have known the consequences of smoking even before the tobacco company put the warning on the packages. People need to take responsiblity for their own actions and quit trying to make money from these kind of law suits. I'm a smoker and wouldn't blame anyone but myself for medical problems caused by ut. from Pensacola, FL by Judi

Comment: Outragious, no one held him down and made him smoke. It will be beer and wine lawsuits next for killing people with liver cancer. Our world is headed beyond stupid. by Janet

Comment: No, this is a ridiculous award. It is tragic when anyone's life is cut short due to their personal habits, but our society does, at least still today, believe in an individual's freedom to make lifestyle choices. The dangers of cigarette smoking have been communicated to the public since 1964. Mr. Martin could have stopped smoking at any time. He chose not to. Blaming others for his choice to be a victim is not right. from Pensacola / Florida by JR

Comment: I am a non-smoker, but if someone chooses to smoke, sorry, the effects have been well known since the 60s. There are plenty of quit smoking aids available for those who choose to quit. If I eat nothing but junk food, can I sue if I get fat and my health suffers? Make good choices people, quit blaming someone else!! from Pensacola FL by Steve

Comment: This is ridiculous. Only a cave-dweller could claim they didn't know of the dangers of smoking. Common knowledge for the past 50 years at least. Whatever happened to personal responsibility? And no, I don't smoke, nor does anyone in my household. I feel compassion for Mrs. Martin's loss, but this is just scapegoating. Nobody forced him to pick up his first cigarette, and nobody held a gun to his head to force him to continue. I know way too many long-time smokers who have quit to believe it can't be done. This was personal choice. from Pensacola, FL by Stan

Comment: She does not deserve jack ---- everybody knows what smoking does for you. All this is just making the tobacco industry a scape goat. Do not say that I am a non smoker, I smoked for 25 years and knew every breath I took was a nail in my coffin. This whole thing is a crock and just keeps making our buddy Fred Levin and his cronies richer from Gulf Breeze, FL by John

Comment: For years it has been known what smoking could cause, cancer among other lung diseases, I dont feel people should be compensated for the bad decisions they make. from Fort Walton Beach by Tonia

Comment: They have warnings & people warn you also. I was a smoker & I quit years ago & it was nobodys fault but my own. Its your choice to do it or not! Thats what is wrong with this world now people blame everybody but who is responsiable THEMSELFS.People are to sue happy thats why you cant afford insurance now because of people like her. from McDavid, Fl by AE

Comment: stupid jury. I hope the tobacco company appeals and gets this overturned. from Shalimar by Kenneth

Comment: It's been almost 50 years since tobacco advertising was removed from tv and warnings were placed on each pack. Does anyone still believe that tobacco is anything but unhealthy? With the knowledge and anti smoking advertising abundant over the past several years anyone still smoking can only blame themselves. from Cantonment by Terry

Comment: I can't believe this. Everyone that smokes, drinks alcohol, addicted to caffeine, dips nicotine knows that all of this is not good for you. So, get on with your life and quit trying to make a buck from companies when you know that what you do is harmful to your health. Sorry for her loss, but he knew what he was doing. And these lawyers make me sick. They to are only in it for the $$$. What has America come to. from Galliano, Louisiana by D

Comment: It does not matter what we ( people who were not on the jury) beleive. Respect the jury and thier findings. It does not matter what we do or dont agree with. from Pensacola,FL by D

Comment: I believe they should not pay anything. Warnings have been on cigarettes forever and a day. Its her husbands fault and no one elses that he died of lung cancer. Maybe he should have read the warnings! from Pensacola by John

Comment: No. This nation has gone absolutely 'bonkers' over money.Money may buy you a fancy casket and funeral, but once buried, money is of no consequence. Likewise while living money doesn't give instant happiness, it's kind of become the root of all evil. Those that don't have it always wish for more of it; those that do have it don't know what to do with it. My point is that if a man has "chose to smoke", he also "chose" to accept the consequences of his actions. Death is always unfortunate, but to remember someone not because of who they were but by the amount of money their death got you is wrong. from Mary Esther, FL. by Tom

Comment: I really agree with the jury's out come but in a way I don't.my father died of lung cancer about 8 yrs ago.the reason I don't agree is because there is warnings on every pack, carton. But on the other hand,i know it is hard to help & watch a family member go through it. it is very very hard mentally, physically,& emotionly.the treatments,rx, etc are very expensive.also tobacco is additive, its like a mind game.so some compensation is ok but I don't know about 30 million. from pensacola fl by jackie

Comment: Actually HELL NO I do not agree! People have to start taking responsibility for their actions! from Navarre/FL by Robert

Comment: if the company is guilty of the charges...then yes...but somehow after that woman who won millions of dollars from McDonalds for spilling her coffee on herself...i knew this sort of lawsuit was coming soon... from p'cola fl by h

Comment: This is crazy. We make choices and we have to accept the results whether it's from food, drinks or habits. from Pensacola, FL by Pat

Comment: once again no one is responsible for them selves you choose to do something that can hurt or kill you you should not expect to be able to gain from your bad choices after they happen. from gulf breeze fl by scot

Comment: These kind of lawsuits are whats wrong with this country. This individual made a choice to smoke and died becuase of it. from Crestview by JC

Comment: She didn't deserve any money. It was his decision to smoke and the warnings were clearly stated on the package. from Pensacola, FL by Frank

Comment: People are responsible for their own choices, not the makers of the product. Her husband chose to smoke & we have known for years that smoking caused deadly health problems. from Cantonment, FL by Katheryn

Comment: I absolutely disagree with the jury's award. It is about choices the person chose to smoke. My dad smoked as long as he lived and he had health issues because of his behavior, but no one made him smoke he chose to do so. Did I ask him to quit, yes, I did, but ultimately it was his choice. Tobacco or anything else - you have to be accountable for your own actions. from Molino by Brenda

Comment: I do not agree with the jury's decision..the smokers make the decision to smoke..therefore they take on the responsibility of what it does to their health. from crestview fl by sharon

Comment: In the 60's, makers were required to put a notice on tobacco packs to warn of the hazards of smoking. Everyone has know for years that smoking was dangerous. Anyone that smokes are on their own. from Navarre, Fl by Mike

Comment: goes to show how juries are really a bunch of stupid people put together for the benefit of lawyers. from PENSACOLA, FL by JAMES

Comment: This is just a PS: I loved the comment from the woman about the Oreo Cookies and suing Kraft Food. A really good laugh. Thanks for the laugh. Robert from Pensacola, FL by Robert

Comment: No one, and I mean no one made the man smoke. He, and he alone is responsible for his death. It is dumb to blame anyone other than himself for his death. from Fort Walton Beach, FL by Sylvia

Comment: smokers have known the dangers of cigarette smoking since the 70's. If they chose to smoke they do it at there own Risk. The Jury was Dumb to award damages... from pensacola, Fl by clay

Comment: Absolutely not. HE knew that smoking causes cancer and no one forced him to smoke. I am really sorry for his death but he knew what he was doing EVERYTIME he lit up. DO NOT BLAME THE TOBACCO COMPANY.... from Pensacola, FL by Christy

Comment: NO I DO NOT AGREE WITH THAT LAWSUIT BECASE EVERY BYE SHOULD SUIT I HAD THREE FAMILY MEMBER THEY SMOKE AND MY DAD SMOKE NOW from PENSACOLA FL by TONYA

Comment: No one made that gentleman or any other smoker light up; no gun was held to their heads. There just was not enough will power on the part of the individual. And, don't tell me I don't know what I am talking about....I am walking proof that stopping smoking can be done! from Pace, FL by Donna

Comment: No body should get this kind of payment for something that they kept doing after getting warned that it is bad. Getting medical bills and loss of income payments ok, but not this kind of money. This is just lawyers and clients greed. from Milton/Florida by Don

Comment: Even if he started smoking prior to the warnings he had the option to quit smoking when the warning came out. It is common knowledge that smoking is bad for you. He chose to smoke even after the warning came out . from Milton Fla by Thomas F

Comment: Both of my parents smoked heavily until they were in thier late 50's and quit without the help of any patch or anything else. I think the patches and pills are just another way for corporate America to make more money off of the weak. I'm not buying on this addiction story. These lawsuits are just a way for lawyers to get rich and take advantage of the weak too. from Navarre by Bill

Comment: I do not agree. Everybody knows the dangers of smoking. Starting in grade school your taught that smoking causes lung cancer. I know plenty of people who smoke and if you ask them about the dangers of smoking i bet they know, and so did this lady's husband. But I dont blame her if i could be awarded millions of dollars for my loved one dying from tobacco i would to. from pensacola, florida by jane

Comment: absolutely, the tobacco industry has made a fortune on the addiction and heart aches of individuals like this poor family from ft walton beach by woody

Comment: Another case of "Let's blame someone else so we don't have to take responsibility for our actions". from Mary Esther/FL by Mike
