Bob Sikes Bridge toll: Do you support a plan to double the toll on the Bob Sikes Bridge, from one dollar to two?

20.25% Yes
77.21% No

Comment: jane and I do not support a 2 dallar charge at the bridge. parking is not a problem at our beach from pensacola, fla by roland

Comment: I will go to Navarre beach before I pay $2.oo toll on Pensacola beach.

Comment: You can no longer sit on the beach and watch the sunset because of the SRIA "improvements". I vote that the bridge toll be eliminated, not increased! Greed is undoing the beauty of the beach. from Pensacola/FL by Thomas

Comment: I am not for any raise in toll and would limit my trips to the beach if it is raised. If I did visit I would no longer spend any money while out there.Lunch in G.B. not the beach. from Gulf Breeze, Fl by Jeffrey

Comment: I see no need for a ped overpass. It is very easy to cross street. What is being done with the current income from the bridge? Maybe there should first be an analyis of current spending practices before increaseing toll. My income hasn't doubled. from Pensacola, FL by Sherry

Comment: Doubling the current rate is not justified. Whose income doubled over the past two years ? Not mine - I would agree to 25 cents, but will cut trips to the beach if doubled. Its ridicoulous ! from Pensacola by Jim

Comment: Not no but HELL NO. Show me were they need it. The toll is paying for things just fine. by John

Comment: Sounds like one more sucker punch to the public. Just give the beach to the rich folks and ban the rest of us. from P'cola Fl by H

Comment: No, Let the Pensacola Beach businesses and residents pay for the transportation "improvements". Increasing the toll will discourage visitors. from Pensacola, FL by Gene

Comment: The beach crowd is large enough already. The only people who could possibly benefit from the increase would be the Board Walk. If we continue to allow the business's' on the beach to dictate what happens there we, the locals, will no longer have access to the beach because of the tourists. I say it is over crowded enough. by Jerry

Comment: What a scheme this seems to be. This will not do much in the way of revenue production from the locals - I can assure you of that. The tourists will not know the difference - but tourists alone cannot support the Beach for the whole year. A money grab, at a time when money is tighter than ever. If it passes I recommed that the monies be used to defeat all the CC who vote for the increase. Lets vote them out and get a CC that thinks of the locals and represents the locals and not the landed gentry. As an added aside the merchants may want to weigh in on this one - your local traffic is all that sustains you when the tourists go home; you have to live here with us and I am sure you will suffer a lot. Mr. White I am from District 5 and I will be watching for your position closely. from Pensacola Fl by Jon

Comment: Now it starts. How do you tax people without letting them know they're being taxed? The County Government, learning from the State Government, who learned it from the Federal Government, now knows how to take money earmarked for "this only" and use it somewhere else. They can now look the public in the eye and lie like an experienced, polished politician. Look out in the near future for other ways our Counties will be getting the money you no longer have! from Milton by Al

Comment: When the bridge was built wasn't the toll designed to pay for the construction of the bridge? I remember it being 20 years ago at .35 cents what is it now paying for at $2. from Pensacola by T

Comment: this is not the time to be raising any kind of taxes and try to support the busnesses on the beach instead of hurting them. by ron

Comment: The toll should be for maintainting the bridge. We should not raise the cost of visitors to come to the beach, investers should make the beach attractive so the visitors will come. They can take HWY 59 free to Gulf Shores. The area has already priced a bridge toll beyound some peoples means. Take a lesson. from Pensacol, Fl by Robert E.

Comment: Shut down the SRIA and use the budget from that to build a cross walk. by Josh

Comment: But I am completely opposed to a parking garage.

Comment: No from gulf breeze fl by denny

Comment: If it means more parking AND a safe walk-over, a Gulf-front boardwalk will only be washed away...again, then sure. Our toll is much less than say Sannibel Island was 15 years ago, a whopping $5.00! So IF it means infrustructure and not the typical bull we hear all the time...then lets do it. from Pensacola, FL by S

Comment: The increase of a dollar may not seem like much, but what am I getting for my dollar? Navarre Beach is just as close and they removed the toll years ago. I can go to other fine restaurants in the cities of Gulf Breeze or Pensacola and not pay a toll. from Pace / FL by Steve

Comment: its about time! maybe the folks that live and work out there will finally help shoulder the burden the tax-payers on the mainland for their "beach"! from p'cola by h

Comment: Hell No I don't support a rate increase, in fact I think we should remove the toll and stop the corruption from pensacola by jimmy

Comment: no no no why not just close the toll booth down and save all that cost, eg.g., wages, utilities, repairs etc and just put a 1 cent tax on gas. Also during high travel times would not be such a back log. At 2.00 some families will not not opt to go to Pensacol Beach thus not spending money. CT had toll booth on I95 and was a disaster until a new governor came in an promised to dismantle the toll booths which he did when got elected, best thing that ever happened. from Pensacola, FL by William

Comment: Just what we need in this economic time...why dont we reduce the Escambia County Commissioners pay 100% and keep the toll the same. Escambia County Commissioners...the economic state of Pensacola is in deep trouble and you want to ad to the burden. Ok, now we know where you stand. And we will not forget your " principles" count on it come election time so have fun with your brain farts as such from Pens/FL by D

Comment: Do we need the extra 2-and-a- half million with no ideas how the money is going to be spent. I think not. No toll hike! from FL, Pensacola by Eddie

Comment: no way money never gets spent the way you vote for it to be spent.cut back like the rest of us has to from pensacola by valrie

Comment: They should go to TARP. That is what the money is for not picking our pockets and give TARP money to those who want to build parking garages at football stadiums. from Holt/Fl by Kathleen

Comment: For years the SRIA and the Pensacola Beach commercial leaseholders have sought ways to improve the "Core Area" infrastructure to provide more parking and better people movement. But the SRIA cannot issue bonds for such infrastructure improvements. Raising the toll is an effective "use tax" for the visitors to the island that can pay for such improvements. The annual bridge pass will remain at $50, so locals can still get to the beach at a minimal annual cost. from Pensacola Beach by Jim

Comment: I would agree as long as they "build up" and not "build out." The individuals interviewed suggest a simple overpass between the 2 parking lots, which is essentially what we currently have. I suggest a 3-5 story parking building (AT NO CHARE IF THEY RAISE THE BRIDGE FEE TO FINANCE - or - DO NOT raise the bridge cost and simply charge to park) approximately 1 acre in size. from gulf breeze/fl by william

Comment: When this bridge was built the toll was set at 25 cents. We were promised the toll would be completely dropped as soon as the bridge was paid for! So much for honesty! from milton by doug

Comment: NO! They'll cover the beach with boardwalks and then CHARGE you to park in the parking buildings/lots. Ridiculous. They'll make it too expensive for people to enjoy it! They might as well put oil rigs on the beach... from Pensacola, FL by John

Comment: Make the financial records available on how many cars cross the bridge and how much money was collected. Beach residents get a big discount and don't pay thier share of the use. Take away the discounts and collect everytime someone crosses the bridge. from Milton/ FL by Walt

Comment: I think they should raise it to $20.00. That would eliminate a lot of tourist, and pensacola beach would be for us locals again. And as I do now, I go to Navarre to get to the island. Its Free from pensacola fl by jim

Comment: as it was .35 cents for over 20 yrs, it should be set in stone for 20 year if the rate goes up to 2 dollars. I don't mind the increase if it stays $2 and the next generation can see all the beach improvements with the increase. from Pensacola by Pam

Comment: I would pay $5 to use the beach since it is such a great place to relax and enjoy the sun and surf and have lunch or dinner. I hate to see the Gulf Islands Seashore areas overdeveloped with parks, etc. Suggest just parking along the roads like they now have between Pensacola Beach and Navarre Beach --- a great natural area that needs to be kept pristine like it is now for future generations to enjoy. from Shalimar/FL by Malcolm

Comment: If the SRIA wants to build a parking garage, let the people who will use it pay for it. The same people will use the pedestrian walk over and part of the parking fee can be set aside for that as well. If the bridge toll is raised to $2.00, it will unfairly affect the people who just want to drive to Ft. Pickens or Navarre provided of course the roads are ever repaired. Also it will only be a matter of time before a parking fee will be "thought of" and then we will have both. With more and more of our locals becoming unemployed, people will be looking to utilize local vacationing resources , they shouldn't have to pay $2.00 to use something that should be free. from Gulf Breeze Fl by Alan

Comment: With the economy being so bad, I think it is a bad time to be raising tolls. I for one will never use the bridge. from Navarre, Fl. by C J

Comment: Heck NO. It cost's enough to get down there, with the price of gas and all. I don't like having to pay the $1! I won't go at all if they raise the price! from Pensacola, FL by Sue

Comment: I will boycott beach.please pass this onb to business owners. They are the only ones that can twist a commissioners wrists. from pensacola by j

Comment: All vehicles crossing the bridge do not add to the parking requirement. Fort Pickens campers will be reluctant to return to Pensacola for shopping and restaurants because of paying toll each time they enter Pensacola Beach. Now let's just get the Fort Pickens road open. from Pensacola, FL by Toby

Comment: I fish on that bridge and purchasing bait and gas is enough. from milton by vaughn

Comment: THEY HAVEN'T MENTION ANYTHING ABOUT PARKING FOR THE ANGLERS!THAT PAYS $1.00 DOLLAR TO COME THRU THE TOLL.JUST TO PAST BY IT AGAIN TO FISH!! from PENSACOLA,FL. by BRUCE

Comment: If you ask any of the people that voted for the original toll bridge, the toll was suppose to be stopped after the bridge was paid for. The county has instead turned it into a cash cow to help destroy the natural beauty of our beachs and turn Pensacola into a tourist town(Destin). If they would spend one half as much of their time on bringing some industry to our area as they do on tourism and endless development, our local economy would be probably be a lot stronger. Oh damn, that's right we would wind up with some blue collar jobs in the area and we just can't have that. from Pensacola/FL by Overtaxed

Comment: The commissioners need to cut the sheriff's budget and use that money for projects on the beach. Two dollars is a pennty too much. from P-cola, Fla by Lance

Comment: Anytime there is talk of an increase in fees, I AM AGAINST IT- generally speaking. I am not that familiar with the span you are speaking of since I do not live in Escambia or Santa Roas counties. I do not see an increase in this as a quick fix to anything, except maybe some money in somebody's pocket. The bridge is not really that old, and from what I hear is quite well used. I would hope that somebody will think very long and very hard before allowing an increased fee to "fill the coffers". from Mary Esther, FL. by Tom

Comment: Absolutely NO, This is not acceptable. It is not only bad for tourist but for local residence as well. If they need more money, then put a Casino on the beach. Better yet put one at the Dog Track to help keep money in Escambia County. So it's not going to Biloxi or Atmore like it already is and will probably be even MORE. from Pensacola Florida by Mark

Comment: NO Way! I don't think residents of Pensacola should have to pay to access our beaches. One dollar is enough. from pensacola by angela

Comment: A toll that high is ridiculous! We have a small, quaint, charming CLEAN island...let's keep it that way! from Gulf Breeze, FL by Jennifer

Comment: Navarre does just fine with no toll on their bridge. What's wrong with the Escambia County Commissioners? from Milton/FL by Tom

Comment: When the toll was put in place it was supposed to go away once the bridge was paid for. Obviously the bridge has been paid for many times over and the toll remains. Not only remains but is now going to be doubled. It amounts to little more than a cash cow blackmailing those who wish to cross. It may be legal, but it is unethical and continues the unending lies of politicians who never ever do as they promise. Am I surprised? Not even a little. from Pensacola / FL by Richard

Comment: I might if they ever finish Ft. Pickens roat to the fishing peir? from Navarre, Fl by Eric

Comment: Where does the first $2.5 MM go? Are you running a surplus or deficit? Who would benefit from overpass connections or another boardwalk? Would these improvements be more secure than the road to Navarre given another Ivan? from Gulf Breeze, FL by Paul

Comment: In short if this is the best thought that ones in charge came up with , we need someone in charge that dont mind thinking past 1 min. to come up with a solution. The toll has paid for that bridge (along with the broke down fishing bridge)long enough... Goes to show you when a modern bridge in constructed ( back then) it will cost you for life. And them some for poor leadership. from Pensacola/FL by M

Comment: If its going to help make inprovement that are so badly needed. from pensacola,fl by lisa

Comment: I know the revenue for the goes to cleaning and repairs at the beach. But a dollar hike on just to get to the beach is to much. How about just a 50 cent price increase instead. from Pensacola by David
