Veterans' Benefits: Is the nation doing enough to take care of its veterans?
| 0% | Yes | |

Comment: I've been a veteran for 32 years. I have saw a dramatic decline in Veteran's care. Some of us have to travel 90 miles to a VA clinic, and then have to go another 160 miles for services not avalible at your clinic. A lot of us veterans, who are on a very fixed low income, can't afford to go. I believe the gov. ought to look into a plan for those that live a good distance from a VA Hospital. from Brewton, AL. by Thomas
Comment: They are not doing enough for the ones that serve. My late husband was a 30 yr Marine with 2 purple hearts. He had to fight for disability and died before he got it. Now as his widow I receive nothing. Need to take care of veterans AND their widows/widowers. from Pensacola, Fla by J
Comment: no they need thier own hospital here in pensacola. they can even afford to give out the medicines your doctor requires you to have ,such as my heart doctor says i need to be on plavix because of my heart , but they dont give out plavix an thier is not a reason they give at all. from pensacola fl by roger
Comment: In a word NO! The congress gives lip service and tells all that they approve the programs and needs with 100% support. But what they do NOT tell us is that when the programs come up for appropriations (money to do them) the appropriations committee does NOT aprove any monies. They instead, tell the defense dept and the various services to EAT the costs out of their own budget allocations. This leaves the commanders with the choice of supporting their assigned current missions or cut short the monies for that to fund the Vets programs. If the cut the mission short then the troops cannot do their jobs or do not have the equipment to do so. If they support the current missions then there is NO monies to fund the programs. Then Congress, in their infinte wisdom criticize whichever decision they want or can. Solution: If the program is approved then take the monies out of their congessional funds or better yet their own paychecks - bet then the approvals would come fast. This is Responsibility without authority as directed by the bean counters in budget. What a farce and what a dismal lack of support for those who pay the ultimate price. I would Trade them all in for a benevolent leader who answers without excuse. from Pensacola by Jon
Comment: hopefully i will not be labeled a "socialist" but the government sure could fund the VA and other veterans a lil better in one of its largest "socialist" programs...its sad that a day has to be made for veterans just so the public can be reminded to our sacrafice... from p'cola by h
Comment: With an extreme bias (I am a veteran), I would have to answer NO. The veteran, up to and including the Vietnam conflict had been promised (although not in writing) if he/she stayed for a career, "free" medical care for life for the vet and his/her immediate family. A fat lot of good listening to a promise from the US government did us. Today, the vet is being threatened constantly with the withdrawal or deduction of our "earned" benefits which we served with distinction for over twenty years to earn. Unfortunately, it's a fact of life that the older we get the more often our bodies tend to "break down" and need medical assistance (more often for some). I could go on, but to no avail. And to think of all these kids today going off to and returning from combat with scars they will carry for the rest of their lives. How will we help them, when in a lot of cases, they will not be able to land a job and "PAY" for the required attention they will need. So, we as a nation, have to do a better job. from Mary Esther, FL. by Tom
Comment: No. There have been a lot of improvements in the quality of care and facilities, but I can see where it would be hard to try to accomodate all of the vets with the variety of needs each one is faced with. We all need to reach out as a community and try to help in little ways as well as larger ways if possible to show our appreciation to those who have fought to keep our freedoms alive and strong! Let's all pull together and do our part! from Milton, FL by Kim
Comment: No, but it is getting better. I have had 2 procedures that the V.A. should have covered but I'm stuck with almost 80 thousand dollars worth of hospital and doctors bills. from Milton/Florida by Steven
Comment: The new VA Clinic is grossley understaffed. The Dental Section is "double stacked" according to the dentist who worked on my broken tooth last week. Many of the reception stations are unmanned. However, the Clinic is the very best I have seen anywhere in the country and I travel a lot. from Cantonment, FL by James
Comment: What would make people think that this is even remotely covered in favor of Veterans is beyond my comprehension. Does anyone have any idea the struggles a Disabled Veteran with a family has trying to provide in this present economy with the current disability rating system? There was much talk and many studies done, but thats about it. More studies, more red tape more congressional testimonies about how veterans who are disabled need desperately to be compensated 25% immediately just to catch up to the present economy. LOSS of quality of life. Veterans with families can hardly keep up with the regular bills for living. Even the benefits for school and dependents is floundering because they sometimes have no disreguard for the student and will hold checks or over or underpay. It may be known as a benefit but can Disabled Veterans or other Veterans really use these so called benefits? A VA home loan? What is a VA home loan if you can't use it? The credit standards are so stringent that no one wants to loan you money on a home reguardless of how much of a cap there is on the loan. No one cares. If I go buy a car I have to pay 19% interest. I can not afford that. Yet I am forced to pay it . Am I getting ahead as a disabled veteran? NO I am getting behind and so are thousands of other Disabled veterans. There must be laws implemented to protect disabled veterans from this racketeering. Lets call it what it is! I do not feel sorry for banks! The freedom that they have should not be used to turn Disabled veterans lives into nothing more than an endentured servant. You get food , shelter, and you can not own anything. However we thank you for your service to this country. Please think about this. It is morally wrong and a disgrace to take advantage of those who served and gave their lives. Every Disabled veteran should have one opportunity to own a home at a resonable interest rate by law. No disabled veterans should have to pay anyone more than 7% interest on any loan for an automobile. The greed and the corruption of Banks and Auto industries and credit bureacracy is reaping what it has sewn. When it comes to Veterans especially disabled Veterans the name of the game is ... Get em while they are down, take um for what they are worth. from PACE by RAY
Comment: The government should do as they told the military they would and give them care for life. Hurray for Bud Day for his standing and fighting for the promise that was made and rescinded during( I believe) Clinton Admin. from Holt/Fl by Kathleen
Comment: Better medical treatment for veterans (espcially the senior veterans)that is now at the age where medical treatment is necessary. Every major should have a VA clinic. from Milton, Fl 32583 by Betty
