Legal Driving Age: Do you believe raising the minimum driving age to 17 or 18 is a good idea?

56.45% Yes
40.32% No

Comment: Raising it to 21 would save even more lives. from Gulf Breeze by Gordon

Comment: No I do not think it would help at all, an unexpierenced driver at 17 or 18 is just as dangerous as a 16 year old. The answer is better training, not the joke of a driver's aducation that we have in our schools. A lot of the local schools don't allow off campus driving anymore due to insurance costs. How can a young driver learn to drive on the school grounds. from Crestview, FL by Roy

Comment: Raising the minimum age shall certainly enhance the maximum number of teenagers reaching adulthood, alive and uninjured. from Pensacola, Florida by Robin

Comment: I have a nephew that just had a car crash he is 17 years old. i dont believe he had enough time to drive with a permit to learn more road safty rules. i think age 16 you should get a permit and only drive with a license driver till your 17 or 18 . from milton by Chris

Comment: yes, I do think the minimum age to drive should be raised to 17 or 18. There is so much more traffic on the roads, plus people just aren't courteous anymore for the younger driver. 20 years ago, our daughter got her drivers license...we were very lucky that she turned out to be a very good driver...but that was 20 years ago and just think of how much more traffic there is today. from pensacola, fl by georgia

Comment: This would place an undue hardship upon parents to transport to and from extra-curricular activities. Has anyone look to see if not allowing teen drivers to drive after 11pm has had any positive effects since that went effect. from Pensacola, FL. by Franklin

Comment: You have to take in consideration the teens who work every day and have to get themselves to work and also school transportation. I dont think that they should change the age to 17 or 18 I think that they should leave it to 16. If they change it i will be very upset because I am a teen who just got their permit and am very well looking forward to getting my license so I can drive myself to work and school. Changing the age will not lower fatalities it will just make more of a commotion from Pensacola, Florida by Dasia

Comment: Yesssss, raise the age to 18 so the young teenagers won't get killed so young. Parents don't know how to tell their kids they can't drive or have a car at such a young age so let the gov't take care of it. It is the best idea I have heard lately. PLEASE RAISE THE AGE TO 18 AND I THANK YOU AHEAD OF TIME. from Pensacola, Fl. by Beverly

Comment: This is the most rediculous thing I have heard all day. Teenagers have jobs just like adults, so how are they going to get to work? Also, how are they going to get to school. The county is going to have to make more bus stops and spend more money on gas. They are saying the safety of kids is a problem, well they should reqire a driving class in high school to solve that problem. If this passes I wouldn't have to worry about it, but I know some families that will be effected by it. from pensacola,fl by Ashlee

Comment: Yes, it most definitely is...given all the new technology, with cell phones, texting, etc. every time I see a young person who is driving, they have a cell phone plastered to their ear. That is not very responsible. from pensacola,fl by debra

Comment: yes, 18. Might take it a step farther. Require at least a 2.5 grade point average. by bill

Comment: I was driving when i was 13 years old and could not wait to get my license. Most teens now days are more mature than in my day.I am talking about the 1950's. from Pensacola,fl by Don

Comment: i started driving at age 16 and by 18 had been in a few wracks and yes they were my fault for not paying attention.i was to busy paying attention to my friends and talking, jamming out to the radio, not trained on how to handle a bad situation such as people stopping in front of you, not using there turning signal's, red lights out etc....I'm 56 yrs old now and i have memory's of friends killed by drunk drivers some because they where not experienced enough to know how to handle the situation and or they were out partying then driving. kids mind from 13 till 18 is still on there fun and games not all mind you. But if we don't higher the law then the need a safety course just like the police dept. takes. from milton/fl by winona

Comment: Along with the reduce ability to recongnize how dangerous driving can be, or grasp the severity of driving; I think I lot of 16 yr old's don't care. 17 would be better, 18 is probably too high, kids are working by then, some are already is college. from Pensacola, FL by Paul

Comment: Yes, most definitely FL should change the driving age to 17 or 18. There are so many young drivers out there that don't pay attention and are irresponsible. Also, I think that if someone fails the driving test more that three times they should not be able to test again for another 6 months to a year. This is a privelage that should be well earned and not taken advantage of. from Pensacola, FL by Angelica

Comment: yes raise it to 18 from p'cola by h

Comment: Personally, yes I would like to see the minimum driver age raised (with one possible exception: military service). I was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. I got my first drivers' license a full six months after enlistment in the USAF (at age 18). IT DID NOT KILL ME, albeit in NYC we did have public transportation that ran on a schedule you could count on 24/7. Yes I'm only one man, but how many others my age lived through similar experiences. All the "rush" to get a driver license does in SOME CASES does nothing more than hasten an early death. Of course if the law is changed, we are still going to have to contend with a significant portion of teens who will break the law-----as we do now with the alcohol issue. from Mary Esther, FL. by Tom

Comment: NO!!! I am parent with 2 jobs and don't have time to drive my senior to school, band, and work. She is very responsible. Thank you very much!!! by Kathy

Comment: I have an eighteen year-old, and he is just now responsible and mature enough to handle driving in high traffic situations. from Navarre, FL by AshLeigh

Comment: Yes. I think the kids would be more mature and think first before being reckless. Taking a mandatory driver's ed course would be a good idea also. from Milton, FL by Kim

Comment: I feel that some teenagers don't think about the importantance of driving safely. They are inexperienced and usually not mature enough to act responsibly. Too many times have I had a teenager fly by me in a car with their radio blasting while talking on their cell phone. I also feel that senior citizens should not drive past a certain age. Their reaction time is slower and with age usually goes the ability to think under stressful situations(i.e. heavy traffic). from Pensacola, Fl by Aimee

Comment: I believe there should be an extensive mandatory drivers training program offered to all teens, regardless of the age. from Pensacola, FL by Dorothy

Comment: What a crazy undertaking it would be to take away the driver's licenses of the thousands of 16 & 17 yr olds who already have their it. Many of them are established with part time jobs while still attending school also. Delaying their learning experience until they're adults will only hinder their freedoms as young adults and their auto insurance won't start lowering until they've had 3 yrs of driving experience with most insurers. from Pace, FL by H

Comment: These days it seems the responsibility level of teens has nearly vanished. Many don't think about consequences of their actions while on the road. I've been tailgated and even angrily passed by teens all because of maintaing the speed limit. Raise the age. Everyone will be safer.

Comment: i think if the teenager is old and mature enough to have a job they should be able to drive. from milton, fl by sheri

Comment: If there was more reliable public transportation in all areas then it might be a good idea. Many 16 year olds are responsible and have jobs and need a way to commute back and forth to work. Without being able to drive, this would interfere with their ability to earn income from Mary Esther by Danny

Comment: I think that it is a good idea since their minds are not attentive at this point. This is not to say that all of the teens fall into this category. All the bad habits that are learned during their early driving years just continue to grown since the majority of them have gotten away that long and feel that it is acceptable to continue with their old habits. from Crestview, FL by Fletcher

Comment: As a young mother I needed a car at 16years of age and If I didnt have it back then My kids wouldnt of got to appointments. Plus like the Insurnace institute says MORE 18 years get into wrecks then 16 and 17 year olds. and some high schoolers got to schools out of their district for different programs how would they get there? from Pensacola FL by Camey

Comment: Young driver is not the problem. The problem is young drivers with Cell Phones. from Pensacola, Fl by Elton

Comment: I believe the best thing to do is continue to allow teenagers to obtain their license at the age of 16, however, I would recommend that if they get a ticket that they should pay a fine and have their license confiscated for 30 days. If they get two tickets then their license should be confiscated until they turn 18. Having consequences like these for reckless driving will allow those who do obey the rules of the road to not be penalized by those who don't. from Ft. Walton Beach, FL by Phyllis

Comment: Make it simple...No drivers license without a high school diploma! from Gulf Breez, Fla by Tommy

Comment: I believe parents have the right to determine if their child is mature enough to handle the wheel. This allows the education of driving to remain in the parents hands. It is also a big help for families that have hard working kids that deserve to have a job or extra actiities because they have done well in their studies. We need to leave the parenting and educating in the hands of the parents. Setting an example and being a safe driver is our responsibility. Remember this, when you are behind the wheel. Our children are always watching. from Pensacola by Jacqueline

Comment: They just need to make mom and dad ride with them till they are 18 to see how they drive. from cantonment, FL by Harrly

Comment: AS a responsible parent, I did not allow my son to get his learner's permit until 17 and licensed at 18. Children don't belong behind the wheel of flying projectiles, on their cell phones and a jamming to the stereo. from pensacola, fl by denise

Comment: by all means YES!! Most of our teenagers do not have the maturity level to operate a vehicle. They're too busy messing w/their cell phones, stereo systems, dvd players, and game systems just to name a few. And let's not forget the current gossip going around the school or who's wearing the hottest fasions. from pensacola by maryann

Comment: 17 plus one year as a student driver with adult supervision before full driving privilages are granted. from Pace, FL. by Jim

Comment: I believe it would be beneficial if there was a better Drivers Education program at the schools. A program where new drivers experience real-life driving situations, not just circling the schools parking lot. from Fort Walton Beach by Jennifer

Comment: The decrease in accidents reported in states that have adopted a higher age limit seem to support the claim that the maturity of the driver is key in this issue. Perhaps allowing for a lengthier training will further increase the skill level and reduce the risks associated with teen driving. from Crestview, FL by Russ

Comment: Increasing the minimum age for Florida drivers would have a negative impact on the future youth. Creating that level of freedom, while monitoring and advising them, helps instill responsibility and values. It would also decrease the number of soon-to-be graduates that would work part time; thus decreasing their chances to learn other aspects of responsibility, not to mention the 'value of a dollar' (which is, in my opinion, already a problem among that age group and the upcoming generation). Additionally, the cascading effects in relation to the state economy could likely be notable after such a change. Less workers means less consumers essentially... Less cars being sold, less gas being bought, etc. from Gulf Breeze, FL

Comment: On the eve of my daughter's 16th birthday,I say no because more intense practice and real experience is needed rather than waiting with no more instruction given to the young driver. Experience and practice is what is needed at any age.Driver's Ed should be required as it was when I learned to drive. from Crestview,Florida by Pam

Comment: I THINK TEACHING OUR CHILDREN TO BE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUALS AND GIVING THEM APPROPRIATE GUIDANCE AND DISCIPLINE WOULD BE THE BEST ANSWER from GULF BREEZE/FL by JIM

Comment: My folks couldn't afford the increased insurance so I didn't get my license till I was 18 1/2. I was mature enough by then to be a responsible driver. I've never had a ticket or accident in the 24 years I've been driving. From my memories of my wild 16th and 17th years, I probably wouldn't be able to say that if I had my license at that age. from Pensacola, FL by R

Comment: yes i do think they should make it at 18. from navarre by april

Comment: I am all for rasing the minimum driving age from 17 to 18. I beleive that young drivers should have at least a few years in learning how to be safe drivers, extra driving classes and more time learning to drive with competent adult drivers. My son had to wait due to bad grades.... O well, my insurance was high for only one year and then at 18 he had to pay it on his own... O, Wellllll. from Cantonment, Fl by Elisa

Comment: Teenagers have no respect for the road and should wait till they are older to drive from Milton by Lu Ann
