Comment: I think any amount of distance is too far for a child to walk to school if there are no side walks and cross walks for them to walk on/in. from Theodore, AL by Shannon

Comment: yes, it is too far for them to walk and then go to school, not for the physical but for the safety sake. too many predators out there...plus the traffic is just too heavy in most areas. from pensacola, fl by georgia

Comment: yes it to far for a child to walk to school. very dangerous and not safe at all. there to may cruel and crazy people around that wants to hurt children no matter what and thats sad. i'm very scared for my child safety.its not right for the children to suffer or worry about how to get to school when they have working parents whos bosses don't care about this problem and will not help with this situation for their employes concern of their child well-being and safety. from pensacola by elaine

Comment: most kids today are obese, and need the excercise from milton florida by Ashley

Comment: All Children regardless of the distance they live should school should be allowed to ride a school bus. There are two many sex predators out there for our children to be safe if they have to walk. from Milton, Fl by Shelby

Comment: Not Safe.!! No sidewalks, no paths.Book bags.Vulnerability. from Pensacola, FL. by Gail

Comment: If people want to know how safe it is, run a search of registered sex offenders in the 2 mile radius of your house. Nowadays, its not worth the risk!! You just asked for info about Frasier!! from Pensacola, FL by Catherine

Comment: Yes it's too far. It's not the distance because exercise would be great for these kids. It's all the hazards they could come in contact with along the way. Mainly speeding cars and sexual preditors. from Pensacola/FL by Angela

Comment: If they want the kids to walk the County needs to stop spending money on things they don't need and put in SIDEWALKS. Thinks of the kids that have to walk down and across HWY 29 to get to Tate HS. I live in Navarre and I will not let my Kid walk down HWY 98. You ask any School Board Member to walk 2 miles down these busy roads and see what they say. If they make these kids walk to school, they need to tell Escambia County Police to get OFF THE CELL PHONES and patrol the areas around the schools. They say the County don't have any money, they can make alot of money on tickets it the just get off that CELL PHONE. from Navarre, FL by Keith

Comment: Two miles is way too far for our children, who can't even be protected from predators and traffic. There are no sidewalks and no protection. How many more cars is this putting on the road at 3.80/gallon? and Daycare expense is the only other alternative?? Where did all the lottery money go.. suppose to benefit our schools. Someone is misappropriating funds! Extra expense to the people... its not fair and its not SAFE! from pensacola by denise

Comment: It's not the distance, however, it's the current environment. from Pensacola, FL by Judy

Comment: In this day and time...when sex offenders are everywhere around us, why put children in danger of being abducted and sexually abused or worse! from Pensacola,Fl by Mary Ann

Comment: IN THIS DAY AND TIME WITH ALL THE CHILD MOLESTERS AND CRAZY PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD, ONE MILE IS TOO FAR TO WALK. OUR CHILDREN ARE OUR MOST PRIZED POSSESIONS IN THIS WORLD AND NOTHING COULD EVER REPLACE THEM. I THINK IS RIDICULOUS THAT WE CAN'T PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION FOR THEM, THEY SHOULD CUT EXPENSES SOMEWHERE ELSE AND NOT PUT OUR CHILDREN AT RISK. I WOULD KEEP MINE HOME AND TRY TO EDUCATE THEM MYSELF RATHER THAN HAVE THEM WALK TO SCHOOL! from MILTON, FL by LORRAINE

Comment: in todays society with all the crazy things that goes on two miles is way too far for any child to have to walk to school. from pensacola,fl. by ang

Comment: Two miles is not too far to walk IF the walk is safe. If there are sidewalks and no busy roads to cross, a two mile walk each day would be excellent additional excercise. from Pensacola, FL by Morton

Comment: For the past several years the news has contained many items concerned with the "O- besity crisis in America's youth. If the obese walk to school they would not be over- weight for long. Those not carrying extra pounds will not gain the eccess. Overall health should markedly improve from Pensacola, Florida by Robin

Comment: I think it is and its also extremly dangerus! Like walking on Olive Road!! Its wrong!! from Pensicola/Florida by Josh

Comment: Why put a price on the safety of our children? I think anything over 5 blicks is too far.[1 mile equals 10 blocks] Our children do not need to be exposed to the sex offenders, weather, automobiles. All the commisioners need to do is pass the cost on to those needing a bus ride...in fact that is what is happing now...our school taxes, just do the right thing. I ask the school board members to park their cars two miles from work and walk to and from their work place, rain or shine 5 days a week. Give those that need a ride a chance to pay what they want. The state does not mandate the two mile zone, they just allow it and do not fund it with our taxes, but we can fund it locally, just do it! from Pensacola/Florida by Ralph

Comment: You are asking the WRONG QUESTION!!!!!! While 2 mi. normaly is not too far foe a child of that age to walk. The proper question would be, Is the area they have to walk in SAFE FOR PEDESTRIANS, ESPECIALLY YOUNG PEDESTRIANS? In many of the effected areas discussed, it is not safe for anyone of any age to be walking. Thank You County commissioners! from Milton by Larry

Comment: The school board has had a change of heart? No, they received more money, actually they got enoght to bus all that need a ride. Wait and see where they spend the rest of the money they got. They need to walk two miles to and from work each day rain or shine. from Pensacola/Florida by Jean

Comment: Yes, it is not safe. Fighting is common at the middle school age and too many perverts, drugs and more. The traffic alone worries me on Old Corey Field Road the cars fly down that road. A bike would be very dangerous. My student is in ESE classes most of the year and he would find TROUBLE. from Pensacola FL by Janice

Comment: Yes two miles is too far. 1 mile =10 blocks, so 2 miles is 20 blocks, some have no sidewalks, no traffic signals. I want the school board to fund the buses to carry all school children that want a ride to school, and yes pass the cost on to us taxpayers...we must protect our children. The state allows a 2 mils walk, it does not mandate it! from Pensacola/Florida by Ralph

I want the school board to fund the buses to carry all school children that want a ride to school, and yes pass the cost on to us taxpayers...we must protect our children. The state allows a 2 mils walk, it does not mandate it! This coment is stupid; "Comment: most kids today are obese, and need the excercise from milton florida by Ashley." Dosem't she know the farther a child walks, the hungyer they get and eat more? from Pensacola/Florida by Ralph

Comment: It is not the distance in question, it is the sign of the times. Children walking are easy prey and the shoulders of most Escambia County roads are deplorable. Do the people living within those two miles stop paying taxes so they can afford after school care? Get rid of the new GPX system and there is your cost savings. Isn't it amazing that this school board makes decisions at the expense of our children and then have to retract it. This decision should have been made BEFORE these one thousand children are put on these dangerous roads or parents expected to pay EXTRA money per week for after/before school care. Once again, our elected officials are caught dragging their heels and not listening to the voice of the people. Listening and making a decision "after the fact" is clearly irresponsible reaction not action. Bring on the elections, it is about time for changes in this county. from Pensacola, Florida by M & D

Comment: It sure is..perhaps those on the committee should be made to walk the 2 miles before voting, also taking a group of wayward strolling children with them( to remind themselves how kids walk carefree of their surroundings..Do this on one of the busiest roads in this district. How else can the vote be fairly judged as unsafe if it isnt xperienced properly? from MILTON by RHONDA

Comment: I believe it will pose a huge safety risk for the children not only to traffic but also to sex predators/offenders. It opens the door for these perpetrators and I can see the "Amber Alert System" being used more frequently. from Navarre/FL by Brenda

Comment: My daughter is just starting high school and she will have to walk to kingsfield road, down kingsfield road, over a railroad track, across highway 29 and over another railroad track to make her way to TATE HIGH SCHOOL. Saftey first for our children, Why can't our high school kids ride the bus too instead of having to travel down kingsfield road and across highway 29. Is this really safe. If it's not safe for the middle schoolers then why is it safe for the highschoolers, who are too young to drive and has parents that have to work. What is the school board doing about this??? IT's just NOT safe... from Cantonment FL by Lillie

Comment: it's not the issue of walking the two miles, it's a safety issue. I can't believe that these children are going to have to cross highway 29 and in order to get there they have to go onto kingsfield road. Very unsafe. No child should have to walk to school. Not in this crazy world, with all of the sex offenders and crazy people in our society. Its NOT safe. It should not matter if they are in highschool, middleschool or elementary school. Safety is first. sandy from milton fl by sandy

Comment: We already don't do enough for or school sytems in our country. We don't need to take away from a system that needs more given to it. The kids are the future of our country, let's don't jepordise their saftey from Pensacola by Greg

Comment: the kids on the street at any time of day is a play ground for sexual predators, with parents working the kids are at risk by having to walk. from pen. fl. by kathryn

Comment: The distance isn't too far (they need the exercise!) But the safety of the walk is what is most important. from Pensacola, FL by Julie

Comment: I Think School Board Members Should Walk Those Two Mile Walks TO See How Bad Those Areas Are When Waking. from Pensacola,Fl by Abraham

Comment: IT SURE IS CONSIDERING THE SEXUAL PREDATORS OUT THERE. from MILTON,FL by NANCY

Comment: This a major concern for me as a community member. If I had a middle school-aged child, they would go to Bellview Middle. There are 15 sex offenders in a less than 2-mile radius: 10 have offenses against children under 16 or specifically against children 12-15. One lives almost across the street from the school. Of the remaining, three are offenders from other states with limited info in the announcement flyer. Only two of the 15 did not have offenses against children. In addition, most schools are within one mile of a major road and some are closer. Can we trust people driving near schools but outside of school zones to always be aware of the presence of middle-school-aged children in the hour before and after school? from Pensacola by Sara

Comment: Just before you all asked the question "Is two miles to far for a middle schooler to walk to school?" you gave a report concerning a child molester, what do you think? by D

Comment: Children are not a Priority. Money is the key. No Common Sense in this decision. from Pace,Fl by Sharon

Comment: The issue is not the distance it is unsafe contitions, children as young as 10 and 11 would have to cross major highways like mobile hwy,hwy 29,9th ave, travel down heavy trafic areas like kingsfied rd where there are no sidewalks which means there is a choice of walking in the road or in high grass sometimes up over knee level with a good possibility of stepping on a snake, they may face foul weather conditions and severe lighting storms as frequently occur in our area, middle school children during winter would be walking home after dark, additionally there are many registered child molesters in every area of town.I would like to know why the school board apparently came to this decission over 1 mo ago but failed to notify students parents till a week before school started and then not even with a live person this was via automated phone message.I think this was a deliberate attempt to slip this in at that last minute thinking parents would not have time to act and voice concerns before school started as the next public was not to be untill the day after school started.I am very glad that some parents found out the meeting on friday and showed up to voice concerns even though this was not on the agenda for friday.I am certain more parents would have been present if they had been made aware of the meeting. The school board should be ashamed!I do not care if the money comes from the state or county we as tax payers should demand The same transportation to area schools as children are to receive outside the 2 mile area. There is a lot of unnecessary spending that could be used so all stundents even through highschool level no matter how close to the school should have save bus transportation for their children.People living within a 2 mile distance pay the same tax as everyone else and should have the same benifits. from pensacola fl by lisa

Comment: It is entirely too dangerous - not just because pedestrians are regularly hit by cars here, there are too many sexual offenders/predators. Our children would be targets in more ways than one. from Pensacola, FL by Robin

Comment: Two miles is not too far to walk if it is a safe walk without having to cross major Highways like Mobile Highway and Blue Angel Pkwy.Crossing either of these roads is a hazard. from Pensacola by Michal

Comment: looking at some of these kids...looks like they need the walk to keep them fit! i remember when i had to walk or ride a bike to school...and it was over two miles! i am getting sick and tired of hearing all these lazy parents pawning off the cost of "safety" of their children to others! if they consider their kids to be sooo important...then they should get off they collective lazy butts and provide the transportation for their kids themselves! its just shows you how "spoiled" americans are...there are kids across the globe that have to walk to school everyday. "transportation" is not within their school budget and have to provide the "ride" themselves. from p'cola by h

Comment: apparently the school system does not care about the safety of the children. many many years ago, it would be safe for children to walk that far but today it is very dangerous for children to even go into a walmart without the fear of be aducted. i would rather pay extra than to see something happen to an child. from pensacola, florida by donna

Comment: Please, lets get real! Adults are not safe walking, riding a bike, a scooter or even a motorcycle on our streets so why would we allow a thousand children to walk two miles to school! Will the school take the blame for kidnappings, hit and runs and the personal safety of the children? no, I didn't think so .... from Cantonment by Rhiannon

Comment: the 2 miles isn't the problem, the problem is the lack of sidewalks for the kids to walk on. from milton, fl by Mike

Comment: I HAVE A NEPHEW GO TO WOODHAM MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HE HAVE TO WALK AND THAT IS A LONG WAY TO SCHOOOL from pensacola fl by TOYA

Comment: Yes. Contrary to the "days of old" when either us or our parents walked twenty-five miles each way to get to school, and then got up at three am to do the chores before setting off to school; times and technologies have changed. Considering the "terrain" to be covered, add in the vehicle traffic (non-existent back in the day), and the common sense answer is Yes it is too far to let a kid walk. Oh, did I not mention the amount of pedifiles we have running around today? Would you want your child out on foot on some of the rural streets and roadways of northwest Florida? I would hope not. from Mary Esther, FL. by Tom

Comment: Our city has fewer sidewalks than any place I've ever lived or traveled, not to mention all of the red light runners and speeders. from Pensacola by Ann

Comment: Even 1 and 1/2 miles is a long way without sidewalks for the children. It is not safe any way you look at the situation. from Cantonment, Fl by Helen

Comment: Safety is key. How will middle school children or high school students cross Highway 29 safely with no sidewalks and traffic speeding past? This should be about more than saving money. from Cantonment, FL by Eva

Comment: No middle schooler should be walking or riding a bike to school unsupervised. There are too many risks for a kid to be expose to sexual offender, drug pusher, careless driver, train, and a mean dog. Most of the time a kid can get bully or skip school when he is allow to be alone with his peer and without adults. The kids need the bus. Were the school board sober when they voted for this? from Pensacola, FL by Christian

Comment: Yes, Not because of the distance, but because of all of the crazy people that may approach them on their way to school. from Milton, FL by Kim

Comment: My kids are having to walk on two main hwys just to get to school and what bothers me even more is that they will be walking by sexual preditors homes and walking home in prime evening traffic from Pensacola Florida by Angela

Comment: Yes, especially if the child does not have a friend to walk with. Too dangerous... from NW, FL by M

Comment: If middle schoolers are expected to walk two miles to school a sidewalk should be put in place. Also there is the issue of safety. They could get injured by passing cars, or even get picked up by a stranger. from Pensacola/Florida by Brittany

Comment: Back in the day it wouldnt be a problem. But this day and age security is a very real concern. We need to protect not coddle our children. from Pensacola by Timothy

Comment: Their are not enough sidewalks for the children to walk on. when we lose a child to to stupidey of the schoolboard then I can' wait to see their next great idea/// from pensacola fl by pete

Comment: I no longer have school age children but it troubles me to see these kids on the news walking alongside busy roads, no sidewalks in places and don't forget the weather. Do these kids have to sit in wet clothes all day if it rains? from Pace,Fl. by Layton

Comment: Come up with another way to save money for the district. Such as reduce the top heavy administration that this county continues to spend. We don't need "assistants to the assistants" in order to do the job. It is time to quit messing around with the welfare of the children, including the rediculous early hours planned for the younger age children. Make the older ones go to school early. Allow the younger ones to go later. Do something that makes sense in taking care of our children, for a better education ,instead of some of the stupid decisions that are made by this board. The two mile "don't Pick-up children" does not save money. by Lynn

Comment: Yes with the predators we have on the streets. One and 1/2 mile is to far for students to be walking. Poor kids are exhausted by the time they reach school from walking from Pensacola by Sirena

Comment: if they had sidewalks along the route the child would walk it would NOT be to far for them to walk but since they have no sidewalks along the routes it is to far from pensacola,FL by betsy

Comment: I don't have any children in school because they are all grown up but as a mother I would not want anyones children walking along the roads like the drivers are today. from Cantonment, Florida by Sarah

Comment: There are to many child molesters in the area to allow middle-schoolers to walk 2 miles to school. They will become easy targets for sickos. How about allowing the middle schoolers to carry a gun and check it at the front desk on the way in to school and check it out on the way home and that would be a little safer for the middle schoolers. from Pace by Kathy

Comment: If the child is further than 2 blocks from the school he/she does not need to be walking. It presents a high risk for abductions. Don't cut back on school bus mileage at the risk of our children. from Pensacola by Sigrid

Comment: 2 miles isn't too far to walk, it is the safety of the walk that is important. Most of our roads connecting children to the schools are not safe due to lack of sidewalks, proper crossing areas, and neighborhoods. from Fl by R

Comment: Yes, i think it's asking too much for our children to walk to school... Not only aim I concern that our future leaders will drop out now. i'm concern with our young girls being kicknap, rape, and etc. Mainly because all our parents are working during those hours...We have to look out for our children... and with this new 2 mile thing... It's not right... from Pensacola, Florida by Sandra

Comment: If the busses have empty seats, why not allow them to stop or add acouple more busses. from navarre/florida by glen

Comment: Santa Rosa is doing that way too. My 6th grader is walking to and home from the bus two blocks away from our home. We have several sexual predators living in our neighborhood. One lives about 3 houses down from the bus stop. All just to save gas. from Milton Fl by Lisa

Comment: What is the county thinking about? The lives of our children are far more important. I also think the High School Students should be the ones to go to school early then Middle School going late with the Elementary going later. Let the Board go to the North end of the County and try to walk across bridges, along snake invested grass, while dodging both lanes of traffic. from Cantonment,Fl by Joyce

Comment: Today we have too much crime going on in our country. Kids should not be allowed to walk to school. from Navarre, Fl. by C J

Comment: Walking two mile to school in the morning would be difficult for any child especially when it is cold and raining but HELLO have anyone thought about walking two miles in the DARK. Unless you do away with daylight savings time this is what will happen. from Pensacola, FL by Mary

Comment: How many members of the school board would walk two miles to go to work? from CRESTVIEW , FL by DENNIS

Comment: i dont really like that becouse their is to much crime going on. who would protect the children walking those two miles us tax payers pay taxes they need to pick the children up like they post to and not let them walk two miles let the school board walk two miles from pensacola florida by wayne

Comment: Walking two mile to school in the morning would be difficult for any child especially when it is cold and raining but HELLO when the children get out of school in daylight savings time has anyone thought about walking home two miles in the DARK in 5:00 traffic. Unless you alienate daylight savings time they will be walking home in the DARK. from Pensacola, FL by Mary

Comment: it is if it is in a hevy traveled area. from Milton, Fl by Edmon

Comment: 2 miles is 2miles too much. Just the lightning storms we have here should be enough for anyone with any common sense to know that. Add to that the violence (your story about Cordova Mall today),, the dangerous traffic problems, and on and on and on. I wonder what school board member or teacher would be willing to walk 2 miles in a lightning storm. so if they do that don't say anything to the disadvantaged people who can not drive thier child to school when they percieve danger. If push comes to shove lets do away with football, cheerleading, baseball, basketball, etc. and get the kids to school safely. I am 64 years old and don't have to worry about kids but i still do. School board members and PTA wake up. from cantonment, fl by marha

Comment: So 500thousand dollans is the deciding factor on a childs life when he/she has to focus on speeders, red light runners, etc. vs. todays activities at school from destin by christopher

Comment: I think any amount of walking is to far this day and time, people are just meaner than they use to be. We all pay our taxes and all of our children should have the option of riding the bus to get an education no matter how close they live to the school. The traffic near any school when it gets out is really bad and if they have to cross the street they are on their on and it is very dangerous. They should at the very least have a decent place to walk if they have to, the grass is so tall in some places the kids couldn't even see a snake before it bit them. from Cantonment, FL by Stephanie

Comment: I believe the way the world is today YES!!!!! from Pensacola , Florida by Tamara

Comment: jim paul should be fired!!! from pensacola by keith

Comment: It's not the distance, it's the condition of the streets. My niece runs marathons, so two miles is nothing for her. However, the two miles she has to walk to Woodham is dangerous. She has to walk down Old Palafox, past Olivw, up to Burgess. There are no sidewalks on Old Palafox, no bike trails, no room at all for these middle school children to walk. It's a saftey issue, not a distance issue. Provide proper sidewalks, keep the petifiles in jail, then we don't have a problem with our children walking to school. from pensacola, fl by kathy

Comment: This is a no brainer. by Steve

Comment: A 2 mile walk would be good for middle schoolers to keep them in good physical shape. Unfortunately, in today's society, it is too dangerous to have these kids walking that far to school. There are too many crazies out there waiting for them to be out walking. It's sad but true. from Milton/FL by A

Comment: Our road infrastructure was never designed for children to be walking the roadways to get to school. Most would need to walk heavy traffic streets or on the side of the highway that are not often maintained and with no sidewalks from Cantonment/FL by Ellen

Comment: I have a daughter that started middle school this year and I wouldn't want her walking to school. You don't know who you can trust these days. I'm glad she is able to ride the bus. from Ft. Walton Beach by Joann

Comment: First let the state of FLorida pave sidewalks so that children can walk on , instead of side of roads, streets. Florida needs ot really enforce the speed of speed racers in local vicinity. Law ENforcement should also patrol areas where youngsters are walking to school to assure a safety is in place and no unsual activities as: violence, perpetrators, drugs, etc.. from Pensacola, FL by Elizabeth
