Slavery Apology: Do you think a congressional apology for slavery is a good idea?
Comment: This would only be meaning-
ful if issued by legislators
who had voted to perperuate
slavery and directed to those
enslaved. Otherwise it ap-
pears to be mere election year
posturing. Why not an apology
to those whose homes were de-
stroyed by Sherman? from Pensacola, Florida by Robin
Comment: I think that if you show me one person that was a slave that is still living, then we should appolize to that person. I think enough is enough on this subject. from Pensacola, Fl by Patrice
Comment: I do not know anyone who owns or has owned slaves. The only apology should come from people who have or who now own slaves. from Mobile,Alabama by Roy
Comment: No. But if the congress were going to apologize for slavery then they should also apologize for stealing the land from Native Americans, and forcing them into slavery, testing small pox on Native American women and children. But remember that Africans were not the first slaves or will they be the last slaves. In some countries slavery is still rampid, this includes Africa. Don't start down that slippery slope by apologizing for slavery, if you do it for one you will have to do it for everyone. from Baker by Brett
Comment: Too late. Those that needed the apology are no longer here. An apology sounds nice, but once an apology is made, a request for compensation will follow. There is no one alive that qualifies for compensation for slavery. from Pensacola Fl by Olin
Comment: NO! There hasn't been any slavery in many years. That was in the past. This Congress wasn't around. I wasn't around, You weren't around. No one owes anything to anyone. IT'S HISTORY!!!! from Milton/FL by A
Comment: No one living had anything to do with slavery and people who were enslaved were betrayed by their own kind. We should all be congenial to each other. Everyone has opportunities to make of themselves what they will, it is their choice how they live. from Pensacola, FL by Dee
Comment: Unless any member of Congress is currently a slave owner why should they apologize for past wrongdoings? from Navarre FL by Elizabeth
Comment: We are not the ones who did it and do you honestly think they would appologize to s? from Seminole/Al. by Donna
Comment: We are not responsible for what happened before we were born. from Pensacola,FL by Evelyn
Comment: I don't think it will matter at all. It would be like your mom apologizing for something your teacher did at school. I don't see how an apology would matter much coming from someone that had nothing to do with the infraction!! I do think slavery was a horrible thing, I don't feel americans in this day and age should be still apologizing for what happend over 100 years ago!! from Milton/Fl by Jerry
Comment: I think enough apologies have been handed out already for something that the representatives or anyone in this century had anything to do with. Get over it and move on. from Robertsdale, Al by Charlotte
Comment: I fell that a apology from Congress is not necessary as NOone has apologize to the IRISH a nd SCOTISH PEOPLE Who were shipped to AMNERICA and Carribbean by the BRITISH and the Irish and Scotosh worked in the feilds and were treated to conditions worse then any other slaves. Thwey were slaves beffore the slave trade from other places started. Check British history back to the time of Cromwell and Queen Elizabeth. from pace by mary a
Comment: It's not doing anyone any good to keep this issue alive, and an apopogy on a federal level is certainly not warranted. We've seen a dramatic downturn in our society in the last 40 years, the quickest in history, and who knows how much money has been wasted on welfare and the like, as far as I am concerned, reparations given and wasted. I want an apology for the senseless overburden on society, outrageous crime rate, higher insurance rates, and so much more continually unleashed upon us by the shameless actions of black people. If we aren't careful, this country is going to end up like a large version of Somalia. from Daphne, AL by Concerned
Comment: Apologize for what? I don't own slaves and neither did my parents or my grandparents. I have done nothing wrong and don't appreciate anyone issuing an apology for something I had nothing to do with. Maybe we should apologize to the American Indian for all the injustice they endured. The veterans of the Viet Nam need an apology too because of the horrible way we as Americans treated them when they returned home. Many of these men and women are still suffering and nothing is being done for them. Women need an apology for the way they have been mistreated and disrespected since the very beginning of time , women are still trying to be treated as equal but as everyone knows this has not happened. No apology or restitution given to females for their treatment. This is why we can't move on, somebody always thinks they are so deserving of something or owed something because of the way someone has treated them or one of their descendants.

Comment: ABSOLUTLY NOT !!!! The more you do the more they want and you are just saying you are guilty if you do.. And that was all before our time anyway.Get over it !!!!!!! Go forward !!! from Ft Walton Bch,Fl by Rose
Comment: Can't we all just get along from Pensacola by Doug
Comment: I believe it is nothing more than political posturing. from Milton, FL by Frances
Comment: It is my opion that the time and effort the government puts
in to this is totaly wasteful.
There is not one single american alive that was there and would be able to appreciate that. Additionally, this program and ones like it are thje same thing as keeping the Racial" is in forfront of tensions. If we need to say sorry, how about to the thousands of americans (black, white, brown, green, or purple) that have given there lives protecting this horriable place that the hoes of reps. says we have. It floors me that this is even a story that has been run. from Pace, Fl by Robert
Comment: YES it is! this one simple action for admitting to a past wrong will do wonders for racial relations. is anyone going to be "better" off? not really but emotionally...yes...its called responsibility...mosts whites folks here did not have anything to do with slavery but i bet their ancestors did...and got a free ride of guilt for generations...this was long over due...now if we can get the rebel flag banned we would be much better off! from p'cola by h
Comment: Why should the U.S. apologise for something that happened so long ago. Why not apologise to the American Indian. I think it is ridiculous. Next it will be reparations. from Navarre,Fl by Terry
Comment: Our congress apologizing for slavery makes as much sense as me apologizing to the Queen of England for personally starting the Revolutionary War in 1776. How "DUMB" can we the American people get? Sending fools to represent us? It started with apologizing to the Japanese-Americans for being born and living through WW II, Now they are apologizing for slavery (none of our Congress were alive for any period of "slavery" pre-Civil War)--- what are they apologizing for, who are they apologizing to that was alive pre-Civil War. History is called history because it has happened in the past. Oh, while I'm on a roll, do you think I should apologize to the Kaiser of Germany for (my) not having been alive during WW I? We have enough things right here, right now to worry about; let's do away with our current Congress and let them be part of history. Let's elect some representatives that WILL face today's problems for us. from Mary Esther, FL. by Tom
Comment: Sure, I'll go along with it-- provided that when/if we elect a black president, the black community will finally admit that it's NOT whites holding them back. from Pensacola by Clancy
Comment: How about a compromise: I'll apologize, you rid us of the affirmative action bigotry, and let's call it a day. from Pensacola by Jack

Comment: Let the Tribes that captured them and sold them to "Slave Traders" apoligize. from pensacola, fl. by ferrell
Comment: Hell No. Apoligizing for something that happened so long ago, Why? from Pensacola by Dave
Comment: Why Apologize. More harm has been done by breading a generation on welfare and handouts. Slavery lasted 200years Welfare and handouts are going to be the death of a Great Country with a shady past. from Pensacola by Robert
Comment: Let any ex-slave owners apologize to all the ex-slaves from Pensacola/ FL by Jim
Comment: no one alive had anything to do with slavery. we do not owe an apology to anyone for something we did NOT do!!! from Milton, FL
Comment: NO!!!! past is the past, and move on,and thay are looking for votes from pensacola,fl by jay
Comment: Where are the apologies going to stop for things that are forefathers did? The next thing we know we are going to apologize to the Indians for the meager trinkets that we paid for Manhatten Island. As stated another response, is this just some more political slather due to a black running for President?
Comment: Definitely not. First off there are few, if any, African-Americans in the United States just as there are few, Euro-Americans, or Sino-American. The blacks should get over it and learn to excell like the Europeans, Hispanics, and Asians do that are here in the USA from Pensacola, Fl 32505 by Oscar
Comment: I think this is absolutly stupid. Why should we apologize when we had nothing to do with slavery, and this is a waste of time and money. All we know about slavery is what we have read in the history books. We, Americans of today, had nothing to do with it, so why blame us and why do we feel the need to apologize? Sounds like someone just wants to appease someone else. What in the world will an apology accomplish? Is anyone living today that was a slave during the time that all of the fuss is about? I think not. So who are we supposed to apologize to? DUH!!!!!! from Pensacola, FL by Wanda
Comment: If we don't stop making exceptions for blacks, they'll never achieve equality. Every time we apologize or give them something else, we take a little of their human dignity away from them. from Crestview FL by Richard
Comment: I think it is nuts. There own kind sold them into slavery. Not us. Further most of us had nothing to do with it. I'ts time to let this isue GO. from pensacola fl by jennifer
Comment: Why should we apologize for something our ancestors did? How can any country apologize for what made them the country they are? The entire world would have to be involved! Some of our history made our country the best on earth. Perhaps slavery added to our greatness. Please, no abuse excuse for what people become! from Pensacola by Brenda
Comment: Why don't we make a list of all people that we need to apologize too and just put it under one bill and be done with it? We will start with the Blacks and end with the Whites. Does this make any sense at all? We did not think so either! How can we "bury the hacket" if we keep bringing it up, generation after generation? Where does it end? from Pensacola by Ramona & Jack
Comment: The African-American race is not alone suffering. All the races that make this country have to deal with suffering. The affirmative action bill has minorities many other groups (not just African Americans) We as Americans have to deal with the deprecation of rights in today’s times race should not still be our focus, but the resolution of the affixations of the country as a whole.
from Cantonment, FL by Ray
Comment: Congress is apologizing to someone long ago passed away for someones action also long ago passed away. I didn't do anything to apologize for. As Usual, Congress is doing things on my behalf that I don't want them to do. from Navarre/FL by gene
Comment: The current white population did NOT own slaves, & the currect black population were not and are not slaves.
Get over it!! from Pensacola by Bill
Comment: Enough already. Can we ever reach the point that as a country we can move forward in making this an even better place to live for all people of any skin color, race, and nationality.
There are issues that need to be focused on without bringing back the past of over 100+ years ago. from Baldwin Co. by J
Comment: I think this would be a good idea, because although we weren't responsible for what our ancesters did, we can right a wrong in some small way by saying we're sorry for their actions. Everyone likes to know that people are apologetic, even if they didn't do the action. from Pensacola, FL by M.
Comment: What about the American Indian? from Pensacola by Paulette
Comment: WHAT GOOD DOES IT DO FOR US TO APOLOGIZE WHEN THE ONES THAT WERE RESPONSIBLE ARE NOT HERE AND THE ONES IT AFFECTED ARE NOT HERE TO RECEIVE IT. IT WAS A MISTAKE, AND IT IS IN THE PAST. WE NEED TO LIVE IN THE PRESENT AND STOP FEEDING OFF THE PAST. THAT WAS A LONG TIME AGO. from PENSACOLA FL by M
Comment: No its not a good idea. They and all of their families are dead lets move on. If anyone owes americans an apology its them for what they have become. Time were better with slaves. from Pace Fl by Great
Comment: There is no person alive who can be even slightly blamed for slavery. Slavery is an unfortunate part of our history. We will never have peace in this country until we stop the race baiters from constantly pushing this issue on us. Get over it ! from Destin, Fl. by Lou
Comment: Why should we apologize for something that we didnt do. If you look at History, the real history, the American people didnt even travel to africa to bring them over here. They just took advantage of what was offered. And futher more they are Americans like the rest of us, not African- Americans. I can bet you that only a very very small portion can say they actually from Africa. So no we DO NOT need to say we are sorry, specially when I cant even fly The Confederate Flag, which is part of MY heritgage, with out fear of retaliation. by Krista
Comment: I think Congress has better, more important things to do than to apologize for slavery. If it does happen, I feel it should be blanket apology (not specifically to African Americans) as many people were brought to this country against their will. “African Americans” should get over this need to continue to differentiate themselves – is the title of “American” not good enough for you? My grandfather and his sister were sent here from Britain because their parents could not afford to care for them – that is much more recent than the slavery Congress is referring to and he never called himself a “British American”. Be glad that you live in this country where you have opportunity – you need to only watch the international news for a day to realize that you wouldn’t have that opportunity anywhere else in the world.
And Congress needs to stop wasting time on ridiculous topics – baseball steroid use, for example - and start helping the American people (which by the way is their job description that they seem to have forgotten) with critical items like healthcare reform, fair taxes, finding alternative energy sources. We can be a better country if the American people demand it.
from Navarre, FL
Comment: DUH! Are there any slaves still living? How bout slave owners? This is just retarded! from Milton/FL by C
Comment: ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! IT IS NOW 2008, AND SLAVERY WAS DECADES AGO. IF THIS COUNTRY WANTS TO MOVE ON AND GET RID OF RACISM AS IS REPORTED ON FROM VARIOUS GROUPS FROM TIME TO TIME, THEN JUST FORGET IT. MY CAUCASIAN/NAVTIVE AMERICAN ANCESTORY HAS NOT BEEN APOLOGIZED TO OR PAID AND THEY WENT THROUGHT THE EXACT SAME TORTURE, LIVING IN SHACKS AND HAD TO "SLAVE WORK" IN THE SAME COTTON FIELDS SIDE BY SIDE WITH THE AFRICAN AMERICANS AND HAVE BEEN SHOWN NO APOLOGIES OR FINANCIAL RESTITUITOIN FOR BEING THE "HAVE NOTS" OF SOCIETY. LET IT REST, WASTE THIS TIME AND ENERGY ON STOPPING METHAMPHETIMINE MANUFACTORING SELL AND USE. ALL AN APOLOGY IS GOING TO DO IS DIVIDE THIS COUNTRY EVEN MORE. from Hartford,Alabama by Timothy
Comment: It's time to put to rest Things that happened generations ago, and worry about today and tomorrow. from Ft. Walton Beach, FL by Vernon
