Comment: I DO KNOW ABOUT SCAM ARTIST CAUSE I WAS TARGETED AND IT WAS A PERSON THAT SAID THAT HE WAS FROM AFRICA AND THAT THE US WOULD NOT MAIL THINGS INTERNATIONALLY AND HE MAIL A COUPLE OF THINGS AND SENT ME STAMPS TO MAIL IT TO HIM AND I WOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN ANYTHING UNLESS THE POST OFFICE HAD NOT CALLED ME AND TOLD ME THAT THOSE ITEMS WAS PURCHASED WITH A STOLEN CREDIT CARD AND DO NOT MAIL ANYTHING ELSE... THEY TELL YOU THAT THEY WANT A WIFE AND THEY SEND FLOWER AND CANDY AND TEDDY BEARS AND DIFFERENT THINGS TO GET TO TO DO WHAT THEY LIKE.I KNOW CAUSE I WAS A VICTIM OF THE SCAM from Pensacola Fl by Annette

Comment: We had a vehicle advertised in PNJ and a man came to our home to see it. He asked the normal questions...and wanted to drive the car. He left his "rental truck" in our driveway while he took (our) car to his wife's work to get her approval. (He stated that he left the keys in the truck, in case I needed to move it in my driveway...) He never returned! We notified the Sheriff's Dept., our insurance agent and the rental establishment. A claim was made and paid on our car -- a few months later the car was found in Georgia, at a shopping mall. ***Beware of questions asked (ex. DOES THE AC REALLY FREEZE YOU OUT? DOES IT GET GOOD ROAD MILEAGE? Oh! I left my keys in my truck...)*** from Pensacola, FL by Barbara

Comment: I received a notice saying I won $450,000. I was given a check for $4,875 and told this is to cover govt taxes. A"tax agent" would come to my house to collect a payment of $4,200 payable via Western Union. These people will come to an address to pick up the payment. I would love to conduct a sting op Chris Hanson style. It kills me to think that they are preying on older people in Pensacola. I have the materials they sent if you are interested. from Pensacola, FL by Kevin

Comment: I was not taken by this woman, but twice she has come up to me in the parking lot of Cordova Mall saying her grandkids are in the car and they only have .98 cents and are out of gas.She is a well dressed, well spoken african american. I saw her walk up to another car and tell same story but pointed in a different direction. I saw an elderly lady give her cash, this poor woman was being kind yet she was used by this horrible woman. People be warned she has NO KIDS in ANY car and is NOT out of gas. By the way, the span of time between the two times she came to me were months apart. from Pensacola,FL by Betty

Comment: This usually happens in busy parking lots. It happened to me last week in the Target parking lot on 9 Mile Rd. You are approached by one or 2 people who say they desperately need money to go to a sick family member in an out of town hospital. These two said it was their son & he had been in a tragic accident. They will mail you the money back. This is one of the oldest cons in the book and I told them so. They took off from me. I watched them in the parking lot & called 911. They came back by me and I told them I was calling the cops so they hightailed it out of there. I got their tag # and gave the car description to the dispatcher 3 or 4 times and we talked some more and then she asked for the tag # again and by this time I wasn't sure. Don't they have to write down what we're saying as we're saying it??? from Pensacola, FL by Tina

Comment: I received a check in the amount of 1900 from Comcast Market Research. I believe that they are trying to invade my checking account if I were to deposit the check. I still have the check and would like to turn it over to the proper agency. Would you be able to assist as to which agency? from Crestview, Floirda by Maria

Comment: I was almost a victim of a scam but was smart enough to realize what was going on. These people used Petfinders to try to scam me. I had posted an ad trying to find a home for a stray cat. Someone contacted me and we went back and forth through email about making arrangements for him to get the cat. He eventually sent me a $1400 check and wanted me to cash it and send most of it back. I knew right away this was a scam. I contacted the Post Master General fraud dept because the check came in the mail and the local sheriff's office said it was out of their jurisdiction. The Post Master General said that the dept I sent the complaint to was the wrong dept and they would forward to the correct area. I have yet to hear from anyone and don't know what to do now. The check was mailed from a place in Africa but the certified check came from Utah. So I guess these guys and others will get away with this and keep on doing it. How disgusting that they would use something like Petfinders to locate a victim. from Gulf Breeze by Rachel

Comment: 2 Wks ago I receive a check in the mail ($4,000) said I won ($50,000) a contest thru Home Depot, Sears, Etc. It did not have a 1099. I took it to Bank of America. They said it was one of the best forgeries they had seen. We checked with the company on the check, it was a scam. No way I would deposit any thing like that. from Cantonment,FL by Bo

Comment: PHONE SCAM ON CREDIT CARDS TO REDUCE INTEREST RATE from MILTON, FLORIDA by SANDRA JEAN

Comment: I was talking to a friend about the chance of getting a grant for a home, i was curious about this so i went online to see if i could learn more. I found a web site it said that it would charge me a fee of 2.97. This fee was supposed to include a shipment of a grant packet. But instead, they said sorry we no longer send a packet, we use a web site. When i was charge the 2.97 fee i was sent and email of this. Later i discovered that i had few unexplained charges on my statement, totaling about 58 dollars. I called the company, they then told me the 2.97 was for a 1 day-trail, and for an additional day i would be charged a 30 day membership for fee's totaling 58 dollars each month until i canceled. If i didn't discover this they could have got me to pay for months. There was no indication of this when i originally signed up for the fee of 2.97. from pensacola, FL by Tim

Comment: I was called saying there was a job opening and that i needed to pay a $350.00 fee for uniform and equipment, but i immediately hung up the phone because the caller called from a restricted number and refused to tell me the name of the company. from Pensacola/Fl by CorDarius

THIS WEEK'S TIPS

This week on Channel 3 News we're taking a look at the Top 5 scams circulating our area and telling you what to watch out for to avoid being ripped off.

A few common characteristics stick out among these scams - here's a list of our Top 5 Scam Avoiding Tips:

1) If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is!  There's no such thing as a free lunch (or a free iPad)!
2) Government agencies will notify you of changes in writing- not over the phone or by email.
3) Personal information like credit card or social security numbers should never be written down or given to someone you haven't confirmed is a legitimate agent for a business or government office.
4) Con artists are smooth! Double check any information (or even literature) they give you.  Simple Google searches or a phone call to the agency or person they claim to represent can help you determine if something is false.
5) Know fraud protection policies at your bank and ask for their help in flagging any suspicious activity.

We encourage you to leave your comments and let us know of any unique scams you've seen so we can get the word out- and stop these thieves in their tracks.  Tune in all this week at 5:00 p.m. to learn more about the Top 5 Scams.
