What to do if you`re in a hit-and-run
1) Immediately take pictures with your phone. Particularly of the other driver or vehicle. You might think they will stick around but they don`t.
2) Write down notes about the accident as soon as you can. Don`t rely on memory. Record license plate numbers, witness names and phone numbers, the time of the accident, the weather, what you heard, saw or felt.
3) Get your investigator`s phone number and follow-up on your case. You are your own best advocate. Ask the officer what is new and what is still needed to solve your case. Create a journal of the conversations. Write down the date and what was discussed.
4) Make a daily log of your injuries. You might not hurt the day of the crash but later suffer pains. Let your investigator know if your injury status changes after the accident.
5) Keep a copy of your police report and know the statue of limitations for your case. Unless there is a death involved, the justice clock starts ticking the day of the accident. In Florida, if the accident involves property damage it has to be solved within one year. If there are injuries, the statute of limitations is 3 years.
