Buddy Check 3

WEAR ABC 3 :: Buddy Check 3 August
The American Cancer Society is a major source of support for cancer patients and survivors often give back to the group once they are well.

In today's Buddy Check Three, Kathryn Daniel meets a lady who spends *many* hours each month doing just that.

Almost the moment Candy Culberson retired -- she called  the American Cancer Society and said, "Put me to work."

The breast cancer survivor wanted to take part in their "Look Good, Feel Better" program.
(("This has become my baby cause when I was going through it, I was kinda lost."))

Each month Culberson coordinates the patients, products and volunteers for a series of beauty seminars. Professional make up artists teach women going through chemo and radiation how to safely and artfully apply cosmetics.

(("The eyebrows go, the eyelashes go."))
Cancer Patient Susie Polk is in the middle of her treatment.

She says working with Culberson makes her feel comfortable and hopeful too.
(("It's great to know she's actually a cancer survivor herself which makes me feel so much better."))

While she's meeting, greeting and generally making everyone welcome Culberson often shares her cancer journey when someone seems reticent.

(("By the time I say it, people start opening up and talking about it."))
Culberson doesn't dwell on her past illness but rather focuses on the eight years she's been cancer free.
(("By the time they are leaving, it's been a wonderful therapy session for everyone, me included."))
