WEAR ABC 3 :: Buddy Check 3 January
ESCAMBIA COUNTY - Losing weight is the number one New Year's Resolution.

Weight loss experts say people want to lose weight for three main reasons; appearance, function and health.

But, it may behoove Americans to flip that list and put their health first...A recent national study shows even small weight loss amounts can actually prevent breast cancer.

Channel Three's Kathryn Daniel has more in tonight's Buddy Check Three report.

Doctor Ken Mitchell is a Bariatrician -- a physician who specializes in the science and practice of weight loss...He's also a Board Certified OG-GYN...These days he runs a Medi-Weightloss Clinic.

Dr. Ken Mitchell/Medi-Weightloss Clinic; "I think I have probably a half a dozen patients right now that their weight loss was precipitated by their Breast Cancer and their understanding of the relationship."

Mitchell says there are about two-hundred thousand cases of breast cancer diagnosed each year in the US.

Dr. Ken Mitchell; "It's thought that probably thirty three thousand of the two hundred thousand are related to obesity."

Here's how:
Mitchell says excessive body fat produces estrogen -- and the extra estrogen causes chronic stimulation of breast tissue -- which leads to breast cancer.

Mitchell says fat also produces toxins that poison body tissue which lead to molecular and cellular damage.

Although several leading studies have recently linked obesity to increased breast cancer rates -- Mitchell says it's a hard national conversation to start...

Dr. Ken Mitchell; "It's something that's uncomfortable to discuss."

Mitchell says it's because two thirds of Americans are either overweight or obese...And the reasons are complex...He says it's usually *not* an issue of simply self control.

Dr. Ken Mitchell; "The triggers are very powerful. The mechanisms within the body that tend to tell you to start and stop eating are driven very strongly by these chemical messages and I think it's more than just free will and choice."

Mitchell says the first advice he gives new patients is to make a list of why they want to loose weight, and then seek out accountability and support. He says take three items permanently off of your menu...Sweet tea, soda and french fries...Enjoy all others in moderation.

The western world leads the globe in breast cancer rates -- which Mitchell attributes almost entirely to our sugar and fat laden meals.

Dr. Ken Mitchell; "The diet that's healthy forever really is the Mediterranean style diet; is the combination of lean meats, fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grain breads."

Mitchell says he is heartened by his patients more active role in their health -- especially the breast cancer survivors. He says more women in particular are taking part in wellness plans -- which he hopes leads to a national trend.

Dr. Ken Mitchell; "But I think where we are in this health care debate in the U.S. is gonna be a lot more about the patients' responsibility and the outcomes and hopefully really an evolution of preventative medicine."Buddy Check 3 January
