ANGELS IN OUR MIDST
They had to have a heart for the mission.
We found that in the Guardians Of Honor Flight Two.
This is the Army team here. We've got a lot of Air Force and Navy here but the Army's going to be running things. He was an Army Sergeant too, good quality.
The veterans and their guardians forged a bond before their flight ever took to the air. As the day would go on, those new relationships would only grow stronger.
Before Joe Denmon became an administrator at a school for special needs children, he was a combat engineer, 23 years Air Force.
Joe Denmon, Escambia Westgate Center; This is Alfonse Barrios, my grandfather, He was in the infantry in World War I. My father was a Pearl Harbor Survivor. Through my whole family, military people. And I'm just so proud to be here with these guys who paved the way.
HM2 Toby Lorge, USN; My grandfather was a World War II vet and didn't get the opportunity to see his memorial. So, I'm hoping today on this gorgeous day, he gets to see it through my eyes.
Nurse Practitioner Angel Shelby shares a long family military background, two sons are serving now, one in Iraq.
Angel Shelby, Nurse Practitioner; These men have given, and women, Oh my God, the women, the valor, the courage, the independence and the pride in all that they are. I want to support that.
Wendell Hall, Santa Rosa Sheriff; They have shared stories and they've talked to each other a lot and you can tell that it's meant an awful lot to them. And that's what makes it mean so much to us.
There were a number of recognizable faces among the guardians. They all paid their own way and they worked...
Ron McNesby, Escambia County Sheriff; It's probably the only opportunity a guy like me will ever have to give back to these folks that provided us our freedom today.
For the guardians and medical staff, this journey leaves its own lasting impression.
Joe Story, Andrews Institute; When you hear their stories and I've heard them all and they're just incredible. I think hearing those things just really humbles me what these people have done for us and our country. Because freedom isn't free.
Dennis Mckee, a Flight Attendant For U-S- Airways, makes it a point to take every opportunity to escort veterans on Honor Flights all over the country....without pay. This is his 15th.
Dennis McKee, U. S. Airways; I'm a veteran serving veterans. I do this on my day off or I take vacation. I had the opportunity on the first Honor Flight from my hometown to have my 84 year old father with me. I spent the most dramatic ten hours of my life.
And every guardian tries to ensure that their veterans have the most memorial time of their lives too.
Lorge; To give back to the veterans who still haven't see their memorial and help them get this fantastic opportunity...
I'm still active duty, so, taking the charge so they can rest.
