ANGELS IN OUR MIDST
For four years now, Micki Weidbrauk has been a guiding light and an angel in our midst.
Micki; "It's a real scary feeling, very scary. To be out in the world and not knowing what you're hearing."
Micki; "Being blind, you have to be able to trust. And, if I don't have that trust, I don't have anything."
Trust is one thing Micki Weidbrauk earned from day one as a volunteer with Independence for the Blind.
Heather Yasment, Learning with Miss Micki; "Miss Micki is as good to be as Annie Sullivan was to Helen Keller."
Today, she's helping these teens give volunteer service at Manna Food Pantries. Micki is their driver, chaperon, teacher and their friend. Her goal each day to help every client gain another step towards independence.
John O'Dillon, Independence for the Blind; "She brings more for those individuals that need extra help because she's a grandmother, she's a caring person and she has the patience of Job."
And she's always thinking. For every challenge they encounter, Micki "will" find an opportunity. The ladies are breaking down large boxes of cereal into individual servings.
Micki; "Like their cups for instance, that we have back here, I put a piece of tape on it so they can feel where the two-and-a-half cup mark was. Just to make it easier."
Heather; "She's found ways for me to put labels on these bags over here. She found all those ways. Just because you can't see, she still finds ways to do things."
That might mean trying things a lot of different ways, maybe over and over again.
Micki; "I believe you can do it. So, no matter how many times we do it, we will do it until they can accomplish their task. "
Heather; "It's just a learning experience and Miss Micki never gets upset."
For as much as she's teaching, Micki is learning herself. She now looks at the world through the eyes of the blind and visually impaired; always looking for the next chance to open another door.
Micki; "At the end of the day, I heard this, Miss Micki, I did it. That's the satisfaction working at Independence for the Blind."
