ANGELS IN OUR MIDST
A mother thought she was just sharing a pastime when she taught her daughter the art of Origami.
Tonight, we show you what happens to a gift in the hands of an Angel in our Midst.
Lizzie Davies, Making Cranes For a Cure; "I make a crane for the person who gives me a dollar and I write the name of who sent me a dollar on the bird's wing."
This isn't child's play and Lizzie Davies isn't collecting those dollars for herself.
To donate to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
Lizzie learned about Juvenile Diabetes after seeing a picture of a sick child on her mom's Facebook page. She was saddened by the illness and the numbers.
Lizzie Davies, Making Cranes For a Cure; "Cause a lot of my mom's friends' kids have it and it's not really fair that a lot of kids have it.
And then the threat of Juvenile Diabetes hit very close to home."
Her name is Becca.
She's my little sister.
Lizzie Davies, Making Cranes For a Cure; "Last year, she had a seizure."
The doctor thought that she might have had diabetes. So, she's been pricking her finger on some days.
That is hard for a big sister to see. For Becca and all of the other children, Lizzie started her Cranes for a Cure project complete with promotions.
Phillip Davies, Lizzie's Dad; "Cranes-4-a-cure.com with the number four. And what is has on there is just a little story from her, as to who she is and what she's doing, and why."
Lizzie's goal; 1,000 cranes. This 3rd grader is all business when it comes to tracking the donations.
It's a graph to show how much money I have so far.
When I reach my goal, I'm going to string all the cranes together with all the people's names on it. And I'm going to send it to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation with all the money.
Under the watchful eye of a doting little sister, Lizzie is determined to reach her goal.
Phillip Davies, Lizzie's Dad; "If nothing else, it gives out a positive message to other people also that if she, at 9 year old can do something like this, at least to start it and put the word out there, then anyone can."
And if you're wondering why "1000" origami cranes...
Lizzie Davies, Making Cranes For a Cure; "In Japan, if you fold 1000 origami cranes, you will be granted a wish. And my wish is to find a cure for Juvenile Diabetes."
