ANGELS IN OUR MIDST
One woman has spent three decades of her life making sure the Saenger Theatre retains that distinction.
For her work, she has been recognized as an angel in our midst.
Song; "The good Lord works in mysterious ways... OOOOOHHHH"
Sherri Hemminghaus-Weeks, Dedicated to the Saenger; "I walked in this place and I knew that's where my heart is.
It feels like the heart of Pensacola and so I've just sort of spent the last 30 years trying to make it better."
In that 30 years, Sherri Hemminghaus-Weeks has led the restoration and transformation of the Saenger Theatre into the grand lady she is today.
And people were watching; one in particular.
Jonathan Thompson, Oversees Sherri Hemminghaus Fund; "My dad, Clark Thompson came up with a good idea of how possibly to honor her."
Song; "I heard about poor chile Celie. I heard about poor chile ..."
Sherri; "He wanted to make a substantial donation to the theatre but actually didn't want to put it into the building, wanted to put it into people."
Clark Thompson started the Sherri Hemminghaus Children's Fund to open the doors of the Saenger to more young people. She's invited these 25 students for the incredible opportunity to see the Broadway performance of "The Color Purple."
Sherri; "What better thing could we do than to inspire more young people and bring them into this beautiful, magnificent space that we call the Saenger."
Zuri Turner, 17 years old; "I really like the performance. It's so amazing and everybody is doing so well. You can tell it's really heartfelt."
Jonathan; "We want to give as many young people as possible a chance to enjoy the arts; attend symphony performances, ballet performances, obviously, the Broadway shows are very popular."
Demetrius Smith, 16 years old; "They're awesome. They're really awesome. They sound like the people from the movie. They're acting like them. When they sing, you can heart them. And they get your emotional side out on some parts."
Sherri; "And who knows what these young people will go out and do as a result of having been a part of this."
Who knows, indeed.
Zuri Turner, 17 years old; "I want to be like that one day. I want to be able to make a change in a bunch of young people's lives."
Song; "Unto the Lord ...."
