ANGELS IN OUR MIDST

WEAR ABC 3 :: Angels in our Midst (Cram the Van: Santa Rosa)
SANTA ROSA - This past Thursday, Santa Rosa County residents took their turn stepping up as champions for our children.
A little more than one third of the students there are eligible for free and reduced lunch.
The Angels made sure that many of those children will still have the supplies they need to start school.

"That's a big bag. Is that for me?"

It wasn't long after Sandy Sansing dropped off the van, that people starting coming loaded with supplies.

"Who do you want me to give that to?"

"To the children."

"To the children."

It was all about the children. The ones who would go to school empty handed were it not for the kindness of others.

We got pencil boxes. We got crayons and glue and some folders...

They're fortunate that their children will have the supplies they need on the first day so some parents were reaching out.

Sarah Lillis, doing her part; "Every little bit helps. And especially with the economy being the way it is, we just wanted to do our part."

Others didn't have a direct connection to the schools at all but it didn't stop them from giving too.

"I don't have any children this age or grandchildren, so I'll help somebody else."

The day was a show of community spirit as much as anything else. It was neighbor helping neighbor.

Joyce Foley, helping in hard times; "These are some hard luck times now. So, I got a sampling of everything; crayons, pencils..."

Mike foley, it's about community; "In my 61 years, I've had many things done for me. And we're at a point right now where we're able to give back and I think we should."

There were the little moments that especially touched your heart.

Emily Melvin, 11 years old; "I went door to door selling lemonade."

"And how much money did you get?"

"About 13 dollars."

We can't forget the tireless volunteers who braved the heat. They came with a commitment to the children too.

Vin Durant, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; "One of our four cardinal principles is scholarship.
Last year we supported it and it was a great success. I told the brothers last year we were going to do it again, so here we are."

It was a steady outpouring all day. People giving what they could, often wishing they could do even more.

"From us and the Elks, we're glad to be able to help."

"It's all I can do; give you a check."

"This man right here. It's all about the kids."
