ANGELS IN OUR MIDST

ESCAMBIA COUNTY - She knew from the time she was five years old that she would be a teacher.

To date, she has helped mold the lives of more than 1300 children.

She carries the distinction as Escambia County's oldest teacher and an Angel in our Midst.

Brody Cecil; It was a lot of fun, a lot of fun.
That's how Ruth Smith's former students remember her class.

Krystal Small; Even now in high school, I use a lot of the things she taught me in 5th grade.

She has taught school for 43 years; the last 25 have been at Pleasant Grove Elementary. Mrs. Smith has seen a lot of changes over the years.

Ruth Smith, 5TH GRADE TEACHER; They don't come with as much structure as they did years ago. They used to come in the classroom, sit down, be quiet work all day. Children are not like that today. They're accustomed to more activity.

Part of her success has been in rolling with those changes.
Everything she did, she put a lot of effort into it to help us remember it.
She would dress up in crazy outfits to help us remember.

Brody; She taught me how to be a good leader.
That's because she took time to make every experience a teachable moment.

Brody; She lost her voice one day and she told me to be her voice for that day.
She shared her gift with 'every" child.

Michael Small; She (usually) had a strong heart. Like she would not give up even if someone was failing really badly. She would work with them and try to get them succeed.

Krystal; She didn't ever just look past someone, If they needed help, she would make it for for them and make them want to learn.

No matter what amount of patience or time that took.
It's part of my nature.

It doesn't take any more time to be kind and helpful than it does to be critical and unkind.

At the end of this school year, Ruth Smith will close this chapter in her life and retire. As for her; what she wants to leave behind, well, she hopes that the measure of her students' successes will not even be found in her grade book.

I hope that they'll grow to be good people
Just that simple; good people, good kind people.
