ANGELS IN OUR MIDST
We take a moment to say "thank you" to those special people who bring compassion to our lives.
One of them shows up sometimes on a his Harley to walk with you the last mile of the way.
Voice of Gary Laird; "It was something that was going to allow me to touch people in a very real way in a time of life that is very difficult."
That is what Chaplain Gary Laird found when he joined the team at the Covenant Hospice Joyce Goldenberg Residence. He ministers to terminally ill patients and their families.
Karl Hofen, Hospice Patient's Son; "He was one of the first people that I met when I arrived here, being told that my father had been gravely ill."
Karl; "Almost immediately you feel like he's family."
He helps them make their way through the journey of life's last days. When he walks into the room, Chaplain Laird assesses their needs.
Gary Laird, Providing Comfort; "I can see sometimes on their faces, where they're at; what's going on, the emotions they're wrestling with. I ask the Lord at times to give me the words."
Voice of Johnnie Cascone; "Yeah, That's a picture of a good looking dude there."
Sometimes the words bring memories like they did for Johnnie Cascone and his family.
Johnnie Cascone, Retired Pensacola Police Officer; "I was the last walking policeman on Palafox Street."
Johnnie; "29 years. I gave them 29 years. That's a long time. You ain't lying. Loved every day of it."
Sometimes the right words are important.
Gary; "Sometimes, there's not anything to say."
Karl; "Knowing when to be there and when to withdraw is a talent that very few people have and he has it."
Gary; "As I leave, they thank me. And it still gets me, because, I don't feel like I've done anything but be there."
A sad note to this story, Mr. Cascone died shortly after our taping.
