ANGELS IN OUR MIDST
18-month-old Mykayhla Woods is improving and is now in good condition at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Their mother, Christian Woods, confessed to leaving them home alone all weekend.
The tragic story of those three babies struck a nerve with everyone.
The images of what they went through alone, in a house with no electricity or running water are almost unbearable.
But, there is another image from that night that didn't go unnoticed.
The glimpse of the touch of the angels in our midst.
Bobby Guy: "I was at the house actually fixing to watch Monday Night Football. And my sergeant called me, told me that they needed help, that they had some missing children that we needed to come in and start working on as soon as we could get there."
"You get to the house...what did you find?"
"Well, we pulled up and honestly the door was open. So, we go in right away."
"There" is this home on Scotland Circle, a home soon to become a crime scene.
"My sergeant and my captain, they're towards the front and they found the baby in the trash can."
That was 18-month-old Myleahya. Her two-year-old brother Jaterius had been rescued by his grandfather a little earlier. That left Mykayhla, Myleahya's twin sister, still missing.
"When I got into the back bedroom, I can see the baby's head under the bed. That would be Mykayhla. I thought she was deceased. And that's even what I told the lead investigator, Troy Brown. I said, 'Troy, here she is,' because she was lying there and there were actually bugs crawling on her."
Ready to accept a second deceased child, something happened.
"He says, 'Bobby, she's blinking.' Then me, him and my sergeant, we all tore that room up getting to her. We couldn't get to her quickly enough. And I was just the lucky enough one that picked her up."
"What are you thinking? You've got this little thing in your arms."
"Just hang in there. We're going to take care of you. And she's just looking."
While Bobby is cooing comforting words, the captain is finding something for the child to drink.
"She drinks a quarter of the bottle. You know, the liter bottles. She drinks about a quarter of it before we took it away 'cause we didn't want her to get sick."
Like many of his fellow officers, Bobby Guy is a parent. He has a five and a nine-year-old. None of them will forget this case. Investigator Brown stopped by the house just before we arrived.
"He says, you know, I just stopped by to say a prayer."
"What is your wish for these two surviving children?"
"For a good family to get them and take care of them. You know, they're tough and they're survivors. So, something special is going to happen good for them. That's my wish."
Angels In Our Midst is brought to you by Sacred Heart Children's Hospital.
As for the children's mother, Christian Woods, she is being held on a one million dollar bond at the Escambia County Jail.
She is scheduled to be arraigned on November 6 on charges of negligent manslaughter and two counts of aggravated battery on a child.
