ANGELS IN OUR MIDST
So many people started stopping by to see his birds that Carl "Uncle Sandy" Kirkconnell opened up his backyard to the public. Soon his macaw population of six began to grow.
Carl "Uncle Sandy" Kirkconnell, Built The Macaw Park; "We have a lot of people bring us birds. Anytime things get tough in a depression, recession, whatever you want to call it; pets are the first thing to go."
Some would be left on his doorstep overnight. Uncle Sandy kept growing his sanctuary to accommodate the new residents. And it wasn't just macaws; there are finches, conyers, parrots, amazons, pheasants, ducks, quakers, a goose, a turkey, an emu, a peacock...
Allison Sorenson; "He didn't have any help out here. With him getting up in age, it was getting difficult for him to be able to maintain all this himself."
That's why Allison Sorenson decided she and her two sons would volunteer. They started a year ago and got bird fever.
Allison Sorenson, Signed On to Macaw Park; It's a lot of hot, long, hard days. Yes, it is. You know, most days we go home exhausted.
18-year-old Brittany Schesny was so impressed with what Uncle Sandy had built, she starting making the drive from Milton six days a week.
Brittany Schesny, Committed to Macaw Park; "I'm their source of food in the morning. They need someone to take care of them. It's more than a one person job with this many birds."
"This many" is now 120, and growing. Uncle Sandy keeps making room.
Brittany; "He wants people to be able to come out and enjoy them like he does. He wanted it to be natural so people can see how they are in the wild."
Allison, "If he had not been doing this, there are probably a lot of birds that would not have made it or would have been put to sleep or even turned loose."
Uncle Sandy; "It's my little way of giving back. And I feel if everyone that is so fortunate in this country would give back just a little but; I mean, what a country we wouldn't have then, huh."
