ANGELS IN OUR MIDST
Eddie Brown; When I was about ten years old, I played baseball here, football and basketball. Because back then you couldn't go to no other park if your parents didn't have a lot of money.
Eddie Brown says the Salvation Army not only saved him from the streets, it gave him hope.
Eddie; Getting a scholarship to Bishop State Junior College playing baseball.
But Eddie's father died.
Eddie; My mother had gotten kind of sick and I took a job, I turned the scholarship down.
Eddie worked construction but still made his way to the Salvation Army every day after work to volunteer. Then in 1984, they offered him a job.
Eddie; I started cutting grass first, believe it or not. Outside, painting, whatever I needed to do to get in because this is where I wanted to be.
Because he says he owes something here. He understands these children and they know "his" story.
Daquvius; He's just, he's an inspiration to everybody.
Get ready for lunch. Let's go, let's go.
Buddy Keen, Salvation Army Community Center Director; They see him as a gentle teddy bear. He looks like a bear. He has a gruff voice, naturally, but the kids listen to Eddie.
Tre Porter, Admires Coach Eddie; He actually shows us the way to take care of other people but first, you have to take care of yourself and get your education so you'll have the money at least to take care of somebody else that's in need.
Coach Eddie doesn't give up on these children and he doesn't let them quit. Grades go from failing to A's and B's. They write to colleges for scholarship information.

Eddie; If you need me, you can always depend on me to be there for you. And I'm not just saying this. I mean this from the bottom of my heart.
They know he's a man of his word and a man of faith. Buddy Keen says something else signals the true measure of the man.
Buddy; I know where Eddie Brown is every morning at 6:30.
He's over at his mother's house.
And before he goes home every night, he goes by and sees his mother.
Eddie; I take care of what I need to take care of for her.
I don't have but one mother. I need to do what I got to do.
And the next generation of Eddie Browns is watching.
Daquvius; That's the kind of stuff I want to do. I want to volunteer. I want to get into anything I can possibly get into. Like, every time something comes out, I just sign up right then and there.
I understand why he got hired. He's a pretty, he's pretty awesome.
