New teen fashion program features modest clothing

Updated: Thursday, August 28 2014, 07:40 PM CDT
Does a trip to the mall with your teenager usually mean a fight?
Some of the clothes stores market to kids can put parents and daughters at odds.

Two new programs can help you fashion a truce with your teen.

What to wear or what not to wear, causes a lot of friction in families.

"My mom would say, 'You've got to come out. Let's see how short it is. Put your arms up.'" said Reagan.

"They want flowery dresses and skirts, and I'm more shorts or jeans," said Monica.

"I want them to be beautiful and stylish, but in a dignified, Princess like way," said Ruth.

"There's just nothing that seems to appropriate for them," said Kim.

Parents and girls clashing over clothes is really an age old problem, but some moms say a positive message may be more likely to get through if it comes from someone else.

Reagan and Hannah are hearing that positive message program called Pure Fashion. It arms girls fight the onslaught of messages in stores and the media that they have to dress in skimply clothes to fit in.
"It shows you your real value isn't what you wear. Your real value is your inner beauty and how you treat people," Reagan said.

Hannah says, "You can be very modest but very fashionable at the same time."

"She needs deeper and more intense colors." Lynnae Bussell trained to be an educator for Reveal Your Dignity, another naional program which teaches girls fashion basics like color and body type. Online classes promote good character. "To give them skills to be able to mentor other girls."

Teacher and mom, Krista Willertz, says positive peer pressure is key. "If you have a couple of friends who think the same way you do, it's comfortable, it's fun, it IS popular."

"I get the attention I want. Dressing immodestly gets you attention, not but the attention you want."

Now Reagan and Hannah plan to volunteer and share the fashion philosophy. Moms of the girls they meet will like that just fine.
