New Pensacola International Airport vendors bring in $250K in April

Updated: Thursday, July 17 2014, 12:03 PM CDT
Business is booming for vendors at the Pensacola International Airport.
The city of Pensacola says the new sales have exceeded the sales of the old vendors.

In March, Mayor Ashton Hayward signed a contract with a Saint Louis-based concessions company.

They began serving the airport in April.
"Whether you get a bagel at Einstein's or a drink at the Pensacola Beach Bar. Construction is underway for new restaurants at the Pensacola International Airport."

On the other side of the wall, it's a work in progress.
Jimi Smith/OHM Concessions general manager "We got a ways to go but it is coming along. Every day it's getting better."
General Manager of OHM, Jimi Smith, says they brought in more than 250,000 dollars in April and that's the highest sales since 2008.

OHM employees say they get so busy, their area to sell and eat food gets packed.
Joseph Goodale/OHM Employee "Having to put drinks in our coolers and stuff like that. I always have to zig-zag through them."
But at least he's polite.

"Can they let me through and say excuse me"
Smith showed us what the new plans will look like.
"We'll have an Einstein Bagels as well as a Pensacola Beach House, which is the bar. And tables all along side this Florida ceiling, glass so the guests can watch the planes land and take off."

Smith says he has lived in Pensacola for more than 10-years and wants nothing more than to serve what's from the area.

"We're trying to stimulate the local economy by ordering from Flora Bama. All of our produce. It's fresher, it's better and it makes a better sandwich." "We have the local breweries."

Smith says he has more than 30-employees now but plans to hire about 100-more when they open.
"We should be open before the holidays. We should be hopefully wide open before the holidays."

Ricki Vann: "Behind security will be a Chick-Fil-A, Freshens Smoothie and another Einstein Bagels and Pensacola Beach Bar."
