Domestic violence suspect turns himself in to police

Updated: Thursday, July 17 2014, 12:04 PM CDT

A motive remains under investigation for a domestic violence
related shooting that claimed the life of a Pensacola woman this morning. Meanwhile,
the suspect - Dearin J. Leggs, 28, of 1607 Gary Ave., Pensacola - turned himself
in at the Escambia County Jail less than an hour after the shooting. He has
been charged with first degree murder, and is being held without bond. The
victim has been identified as Angela M. Covington, 37, of the same address. Leggs
and Covington were boyfriend and girlfriend, said Sgt. Kevin Christman. The
shooting occurred just before noon inside Ann Marie's All That and More, 2405
W. Cervantes St., a clothing store owned by Covington. Christman said Leggs
shot Covington inside the business and then left the area in a vehicle. A woman
who was inside the business at the time of the shooting ran to a business next door
and reported the incident. Police were then called. This was the first homicide
to occur with city limits this year. The Gun Crime Response Team has been
activated to participate in the investigation. "I was deeply saddened to learn
today that a young woman was tragically shot and killed by her boyfriend in a
domestic violence incident this morning in the Brownsville neighborhood," said
Mayor Ashton Hayward. "My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends,
and our community will stand with them in the difficult days ahead."
