Updated: Tuesday, October 15 2013, 11:18 PM CDT
WASHINGTON -- Time is running out for the government to take action before it reaches its credit limit on Thursday. It seemed a deal had been reached early this afternoon...With the House poised to vote to end the government shutdown.
But just hours after house leaders confirmed a vote... They canceled their plans. Tonight... Senate democrat Harry Reid and his GOP counterpart Mitch McConnell restarted negotiations. They say Senate staffers will work through the night drafting a proposal.
It was a day of wheel spinning on Capitol Hill and after it was all said and done - it was back to square one. Earlier today Senate majority leader Harry Reid was optimistic. We've been engaged in productive bipartisan negotiations in the senate and now the best chance for avoiding a default and re-opening the government rest in the senate.
Reid and minority leader Mitch McConnell continue to work on a bipartisan deal that would-reopen the government but only until January 15 -avoid a default by extending the nation's credit limit - but only until February 7-and here's the key - no major changes to the health care law. House Republicans tried to develop an alternative plan that included tweaks to Obamacare.
But it died this evening before it even came up for a vote! Tea party republicans opposed it because it didn't go far enough. In an interview today with ABC station WABC President Obama said there have been times when he and speaker Boehner have agreed. Then he goes back and it turns out that he can't control his caucus.
But the President was optimistic that the Senate would avert a crisis.
What we've seen amongst the senate democrats and republicans is recognition that there are ways for us to do this that doesn't damage the economy.
Wall Street is worried - the market's closed down for the day and tonight a credit rating agency put the USA triple a credit rating under
