State parks busier because of gov't shutdown

Updated: Tuesday, October 8 2013, 08:14 PM CDT
It's Day 8 of the government shutdown and still no solution in Washington.
While national parks are still closed because of the hiatus, state parks are still open.

One park is seeing more visitors than usual for this time of year.
If you're looking for a camp site for this weekend, you'll have to go somewhere else.
From Friday to Sunday, Big Lagoon State Park is all booked up.
Gary Lepak, Camper: "I actually like it better than Fort Pickens."
Gary Lepak is camping at the park for the first time.
Gary Lepak, Camper: "It's a better campground, better facilities and easier to launch a paddleboard."
Lepak is nearing the end of a cross-country journey from Washington State, which he's made more than once.
In the past he's enjoyed camping at national parks, but this time he's had to make a change of plans.

Gary Lepak, Camper: "When I left Arizona, I was gonna go up to the Grand Canyon 'cause I haven't been there in a few years, so I was kind of disappointed that that would be closed."

Mary Peterson, Hiker: "This is great. This is a lot of fun."
Mary Peterson and Carolyn O'Connor are visiting from Colorado.
They say they've spent the day hiking and enjoying the many sites and sounds the park has to offer.

Carolyn O'Connor, Hiker: "We've been coming down here for 30 years, but we've never come over to the state park before."
Julie Broadway is one of the volunteer hosts at the park.
They're here to keep up the place and give campers a hand if they need it.

Julie Broadway, Volunteer Host: "We like seem to have a lot more traffic coming through. We like it when it's busy because we get to meet more people and talk to a lot more people."
