Glimmer of hope in Washington for extending debt ceiling

Updated: Thursday, October 10 2013, 07:18 PM CDT
WASHINGTON   -  Just one week left before the United States hits its debt ceiling there is a glimmer of hope this afternoon that there may be a compromise on Capitol Hill.

What we want to do is to offer the president today the ability to move - a temporary increase in the debt ceiling,

House Speaker John Boehner says republicans will vote for a 6-week extension of the debt limit.

But only if Obama first agrees to fresh negotiations on spending cuts.
And under the plan, the partial government shutdown would continue.

A spokesman says President Barack Obama will "Likely" sign a bill extending the government's ability to borrow money.

But that he wants congress to reopen the government at the same time.
The president is happy that cooler heads at least seem to be prevailing in the House, that there at least seems to be a recognition that default is not an option

While President Obama is open to a short-term debt extension he strongly prefers a long term solution that would also reopen the government.

Congressional sources say they expect the gop proposal to come up for a vote in the House tomorrow.
