Benefits checks could be delayed if debt ceiling isn't raised

Updated: Monday, October 14 2013, 11:12 PM CDT
If no deal is reached, Thursday, the federal government will run out of money and their authority to borrow more money will expire.
At that point, funding will disappear for much more than just national parks and non-essential services.
If the federal debt ceiling is not extended, the Obama administration will have to decide whether to delay or even suspend billions of dollars in social security checks, food stamps and unemployment benefits.

Checks for social security, unemployment benefits and tax refunds scheduled to go out as soon as this Friday could be delayed up to four days.

Channel 3's Jenise Fernandez spoke with a couple on edge as the continuing fiscal stalemate continues.

The uncertainty is frustrating for retired Air Force Veteran, Steven Wulf.
Wulf depends on social security checks to get by day to day... From paying bills to buying groceries.

To make matters worse,  Wulf hasn't been receiving his VA benefits because of the shutdown.
Social security is all he has left.
If social security goes, Wulf says he will tap into his savings account, which is something he wants to avoid.

Wulf's wife, Linda, has written letters to congress, voicing her frustration.
She says they did not expect things to be so stressful in their retirement.

President Obama has said that he cannot guarantee social security checks will go out on time if the government defaults.
Reporting live in the studio, Jenise Fernandez, Channel Three News.
