Breakdown of deadlines for Affordable Care Act

Updated: Tuesday, October 1 2013, 09:19 PM CDT
Here is a breakdown of key dates and deadlines for the Affordable Care Act.

Today is the first day you can sign up for coverage.
If you want your coverage to begin on January 1st, you have to enroll by December 15th.

On January 1st, you have to have coverage of some kind to avoid penalties.
That coverage can be one of several things, like  insurance through your job, Medicare, Medicaid, or Veterans Health Care programs.

On March 31st, open enrollment closes until until this time next year.
If you choose not to have health coverage, you'll face a fine for the year.

The fine will be either 95 dollars a person  or 1 % of your income in 2014, whichever is higher.

But the *maximum fee a family would have to pay next year is 285 dollars.
Those fees will increase every year and they are due with your taxes on April 15th.
