Angels in our Midst (Janice and Buttons)

ESCAMBIA COUNTY  -  When her therapy dog passed away, Janice Monks went to the Animal Shelter and made another rescue.
She and her new partner are back at the nursing homes every Friday but during the week, they go to school.
We made a visit to learn the lessons of the Angels in our Midst.
"Touch the red ball."
"OOOOhhh.  Good for you."

Jaylen;  "He's still a baby and his name is Buttons."

One-year-old Buttons and owner, Janice Monks, are masters at captivating young audiences.  After all, buttons knows about doing well in school.

Janice Monks, Certified Pet Partner;  "He did listen to his teachers and he did do his homework every night.  He practiced and practiced and because he did, he was able to pass the test that he has to pass."

Buttons impresses with his knowledge.
"Touch the baby."
"Good boy."

He teaches the children to take care of their pets.
Alexandria Panky, 6 years old;  You feed it and you take it for a walk.

Janice Monks, Certified Pet Partner;  "One of the things that we want to teach the kids is kindness to animals.  Because, if they're going to be kind to their own animals, they're going to be kind to people too."

Their most important lesson is how to be safe around animals.
"Put my hand through the fence and pet Buttons?  No.  You know what he might do."
"Bite you."
"He might bite you because it's his job to take care of that yard."

Like Buttons, the children listen.  They learn what to do if a dog chases them.
Jaylen Lyons, 9 years old;  "Don't run because the dog won't hurt you if you stand still, he won't hurt you."

And if they're on the ground...
"You are going to get your ears, your eyes, your nose, your mouth and your brain covered with your arms like this."

So, how did our teachers do?  It's test time.  How do you care for your pet?

Trent Huggins, 6 years old;  "If your water gets dirty and starts to get real... clean the water up."

If a dog runs after you...
Alexandria;  "Stay still."
Jaylen;  "Like that instead of looking at the dog."

And if you fall...
Trent;  "Roll like a ball."
