Angels in our Midst (Eva Millican-Mamaw)

She's an 85 year old grandmother who says being around children keeps her young.
So, she has found a place among hundreds of them where she does the work of an Angel in our Midst.

Eva Millican, Beulah Elementary's "Mamaw";  I came here the first day this school opened, with my granddaughter.  I do not remember how many years ago that was.

By staff accounts, that was more than 30 years ago.  Miss Eva Millican has been a fixture at Beulah Elementary ever since.

Mamaw;  I enjoy working with the little kindergarten students; doing projects for the teachers.

She has her own little work station where she provides the extra hands to tackle those time consuming projects teachers end up doing at night and on the weekends. Then she spends the rest of her day with the students.  They all know her...

Rylee Henderson, Kindergarten Student;  Mamaw.
Mamaw absolutely loves this part of her "job".  She's a perfect fit for the classroom.

Mamaw;  I love to go out there to lunch with them everyday.  It's, Mamaw, open this water bottle; I can't open this pudding and I can't tear this sack.  Mamaw, would you do this for me.  So, that's what I do.

Rylee Henderson;  When we're at lunch, she kinda knows when we need help.  She kinda opens our things and stuff.

You know, the kind of stuff that comes naturally to Mamaws.
Cathy Ciccone, Kindergarten Teacher;  It might be intuition but she knows when a kid needs a hug.  She's so in tune to the children and she knows when to give a pat on the pack.  She knows when to give an extra embrace and to help kids feel special.

A special feeling is what she gets in return.
Mamaw;  You get lots of hugs.  You get lots of tears.  You get lots, you know, Mamaw, look at my new shoes.

That keeps Miss Eva coming to school.  She's here five days a week from the first bell to the last one.  The teachers and the children know they can always count on Mamaw.

Rylee;  She'll go up to 'em and ask them what's wrong and then she'll fix it.
