TRACKING THE TROPICS

On the map below, the circle over the Gulf of Mexico is for an area of low pressure heading toward Texas.  Development is not expected.  Also, we're tracking Cristobal and a tropical wave over the Atlantic Ocean that may become another depression though chances are low.

Angels In Our Midst (Erik Peterson)

Updated: Tuesday, March 19 2013, 11:01 AM CDT
Thousands of military men and women come to the gulf coast each year for their next round of training.

While they wait weeks, or even months, to "School up", they are strongly encouraged to spend their time wisely.

A grateful community benefits from that time and talents of the Angels in Our Midst.

Ensign Erik Peterson has come to say goodbye to the new friends he's made at the Arc Gateway over the past five months.

Donna Fassett, Arc Gateway Exec. Dir.; "There are so many things that we just don't have the staff or the resources to make happen and they're able to do that. Whether it's landscaping or whether it's fixing things at a group home or even just hands on with someone, makes such a difference."

Ensign Peterson recruited and assigned a crew of at least three volunteers for every day. Diligently maintaining a detailed roster of assignments.

Peterson; " It's actually something that I learned through OCS. It's one of those things that if you're not organized, you're going to fall behind the curve. It might not have been my strong suit at first, but it's definitely been something that I've learned."

It was a combination of that navy and "home" training that brought him here.

"You want me to eat the sand?"

Erik says his mom laid the foundation early on with this simple challenge.

"If you have the opportunity and you have the time to help people, there's no excuse, you really should be out there doing it."

While waiting to reach their goal to become navy pilots, he and his team are helping others fulfill their dreams.

Ens Christopher Varona, Flight Student; "I've never done anything like this. A lot of the other jobs didn't sound so rewarding. This one sounded like I could, you know, make a difference. "

It's time for Erik to start Flight School but he's assured that his mission here at Arc Gateway will continue.

"Come on."

"What happened to it?"

He has a replacement in line already. He has another ensign who's going to step up to the plate and keep the volunteers coming.

"I consider myself to be very lucky and blessed to be where I am and to have the ability to do what I'm doing right now. So, stopping by and helping out, it's just something that's kind of expected."

Actually, it's beyond the expected.

ENS Peterson; "We really want to leave a positive outlook on the Navy in general."
