While most have faded from the landscape, one family neighborhood store has grown from 17 to 72 employees.

David;  "I used to play store with the stuff from my dad's vegetable garden.  I mean out on the highway, I would set up my little produce stand.  I mean, I was six, seven years old."

After more than two decades with large chain grocery stores, David Apple sort of returned to his humble Northwest Kansas roots.  He opened the successful neighborhood grocery, Apple Market 15 years ago.

David Apple, Owner, Apple Market;  "We've got a great location and we enjoy the Lord's favor, too.  I mean, we've been blessed a bunch."

Sharing those blessings is another lesson from his upbringing,  he donates money,  his time, products from the store for countless causes and events.

David;  "Again, that comes from all that's been given to us.  We want to be a part of this community for generations to come."

David is very modest about just how much he gives and frankly, will steer the conversation away from that.

David;  "It's about a lot more than money.  It's about  people and their lives and, you know, helping people's lives be better. Assisting anyone we can that's poor or disabled.  We just really try to help, be good neighbors more than anything else."

And his neighborhood, like his heart, is very big.

Donna Fassett, ARC Gateway;  "I don't think there's ever been a time when we've called David when we had a need and said, Can you help us, where he hasn't said, Of course.  What can I do for you."

We're with a group called Converge. It's not just East Brent, it's several, six, six local churches.

From churches, to non-profit agencies, to schools, to individuals with a cause or need, David Apple's doors are open.

Nikki Presley, Teens Collecting for Manna Food Pantries;  "Sometimes people are concerned when they see all these kinds coming up and he just came out and said, Hey, what can I help you with.  Helped us set up.  Helped us move things around; fantastic."

David was humbled and embarrassed when he learned that so many people wanted him recognized for his kindness.

David;  "We've enjoyed a great deal of blessings and we just want to pass it on when we can."

Angels in our Midst is brought to you by Sacred Heart Children's Hospital.
