Angels in our Midst (Big Sister, Beverly Mayo)

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 01:43 PM CDT
PENSACOLA - She's the mother of one son who befriended two girls at a time when they needed someone special in their lives.

Her role as a big sister has left footprints for many others to follow.

Beverly Mayo: "She's in college.  She was in elementary school when we met and her mother had just passed away."

And that was when we first met Beverly Mayo.  In 2002, she was in her 3rd year being Big Sister to Brianna who was being raised by a disabled grandmother.

After her grandmother's death, Beverly saw Brianna off to FAMU.  Then she opened her heart to another little girl who needed a Big Sister; Demayla.

These two are as close as any sisters could be.  And they share just as much.

Demayla; "Sometimes we get in her pool.  And sometimes we even go to the mall.  We do a lot of stuff together."

"We went to the beach and got shells. We ride bikes at Bayview."
Beverly just uses her successes from Brianna.

Beverly: "Always to let them know that they are wonderful; they are special.  And number two, I always knew books were going to be the key.  As I see it, it's the cheapest way to travel."

The "girls" get together often, including weekends, but Tuesday is their scheduled day to meet.  That makes every Monday, a day of anticipation.

Demayla: "I be ready for her to come and get me the next day.  And I know I'll have fun."

Beverly;  "It's one of those that's visibly clear, the impact that you make.  Even just a few minutes a week.

Those few minutes each week have impacted two lives in a big way.  And that has not gone unnoticed.

Paula Shell, Big Brothers/Big Sisters Director;  "We're here to tell you that you have won Florida Big Sister of the year."

Beverly: "It's not even me. It's my girls.  It's just so easy to love them and so easy to be with them."

It's been easy for the littles too.
Demayla: "She's been great to be my Big Sister and I love her."
