Angel in our Midst (Paige Connors - Lauren Scott)

Two girls were heartbroken when they learned that a young child in their church was seriously ill.

They felt helpless, but not for long.
Their sadness only spurred them to get up, and do something.

Carolyn had surgery to remove a tumor and is starting nine months of chemo and radiation
Paige Connors, An Angel for Carolyn;  Her mom texted my mom and some of her friends and it was just, very sad for me to understand why she has to be going through this.

11 year old paige Connors was devastated when she got the news that four year old family friend and church member, carolyn Hendrix, was stricken with Ewing's Sacroma, a rare bone cancer.   The news touched the entire congregation at Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Lauren Scott,   Carolyn's Angel;  I would baby-sit her on a regular basis.  And when I found out she had cancer, I, it just didn't make sense.  It doesn't make sense when anyone has cancer but thinking from a child's perspective, I mean, chemo, radiation.

Paige;  I just wanted to help some way.  It was kind of hard just to sit back and watch.  I need to be active and help.

Kathryn Hendrix, Carolyn's Mom;  I told Paige, I said, Paige, you don't need to do anything.  What you're doing coming to play with Carolyn is enough.  But, she wanted to.

Sitting at the hospital with carolyn for hours everyday wasn't enough.  Paige came up with the idea of a 3-K family walk.  Half of the funds would go to help cover Carolyn's medical costs and the other to childhood cancer research.  With 17 year old Lauren Scott at her side, the two embarked upon a big undertaking.

Paige;  It was difficult.  There is a lot of things that I didn't know that had to be put in to actually do it, so.  But, I just wanted to figure out some way that I could help without, well, without doing something a little too over my head.

Lauren;  Never in my life would I have realized it would have been this much work but definitely worth it.  We've had to get sponsors.  We've had to talk to the community officials for closing the street, for waiving dues.

The part that did come easy was getting the support of fellow church members.
Lauren;  We asked them, Raise your hand if you know anyone battling cancer.  Raise your hand if you know anyone battling childhood cancer; and every single person's hand in the congregation was raised.

All of the planning, preparation and prayers brought them to their big day.
Paige;  I'm just excited that all of our work has actually finally paid off.
It's kind of hard to believe that it's finally here after six months of planning.

Lauren;  The support from everyone in this community has definitely made the difference.  It's proven to me the goodness in people.  Uumm, I mean, fight like a princess, fight for Carolyn.

This fight that lauren and paige waged for carolyn, raised $11.986.32.  A big return for a first adventure of two young ladies who refused to sit back and do nothing.  As for the future, they plan to make an even bigger impact; about looking at the same career field.

Lauren;  I actually plan on being a pediatrician. I interned at Sacred Heart over the summer.  And as I went from room to room, it was incredible to see the strength of the little children fighting whatever battle they are.

Paige;  I can make a difference in some people's lives and that's what I most want to be.

Angels in our Midst is brought to you by Sacred Heart Children's Hospital.
