Do you know your resting metabolic rate? 
If you are trying to lose weight, that information could help you achieve your goal.

Channel Three's Jim Carmack introduces us to a handheld device that measures your metabolism.

Most medical experts agree that the most effective way to lose weight is with diet and exercise.  But there's a tool that can be used to help fine tune the amount of calories your body specifically needs to lose weight in a safe way.

Dr. Anthony Huynh/Sacred Heart Medical group said, "There is no magic way or quick way to get the weight down."

Doctor Anthony Huynh says a combination of healthy eating, increased activity and a change of mind set are vital to effective long term weight loss.  But knowing your metabolic rate can also help.

"Everybody's different and that's why metabolism is affected by genetics, the weight which is the fat mass versus the muscle mass, and also activity level."

He uses the "med gem" machine.  It's a breathing device you use by sitting still for 10 minutes and simply breathing.

Misti Gillman/office nurse said, "What that does is tell us your resting metabolic rate along with your volume and oxygen intake."
    The higher your metabolism, the more calories you normally burn.

"It give us a basis to start, whether we need to increase your calorie intake, decrease your calorie intake, possibly more ways to burn the energy itself.  Whether you need to exercise, eat more protein foods, things like that to help increase your metabolism."

By eating around 500 calories less than you normally burn in a day, results can include a loss of 1 to 2 pounds a week.
"Some people don't like to count calories, so it's just to give them an idea why they gain weight so easily, or it's hard for them to lose weight."

Losing weight can also help with other health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, joint problems and more.
"As far as I know, Dr. Huynh is one of the only physicians to offer this in the tri state area."

The medgem test is covered by most insurance plans.  It's non-invasive, but you are asked to fast for 4 hours before the test, and wear a nose clip like this.
