HEALTH WATCH: Obesity is plaguing America

Obesity is a problem plaguing America.
According to the Centers for Disease Control during the past 20 years, there has been an increase in obesity in the US .

More than one-third of adults and  17-percent of children and adolescents are obese.
So what can be done to lose those extra pounds?

"Experts say obesity doesn't just effect one thing...It effects your entire body and sometimes your way of life.
    
But how can you take your life back from the disease?"
Sacred Heart Weight Management and Nutrition Specialist Doctor Anthony Huynh says obesity comes with a laundry list of complications..
    
Including diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea, and high cholesterol...
All can be life threatening..
He says the first step is changing your lifestyle...

Dr. Anthony Huynh  "We always promote people for a healthier lifestyle starting with more active, eating and drinking healthier."
    
Changing eating habits is something Kathy Summerline says is hard but a must..
Kathy Summerline "Instead of going to get that candy bar I go and reach for a piece of fruit and it's not easy you're going to mess up."
    
At her heaviest Kathy weighed nearly 360 pounds..
Her weight was effecting her health.. she has type two diabetes.

"There was a time I was at my heaviest I would've of really liked to just stay in bed and that's a vicious cycle to because you don't feel like getting up and you don't feel like doing anything, so you go eat."
    
That's why Kathy went searching for help.
And started seeing Dr. Huynh who introduced her to resting metobolic-rate testing..

"It's a quick test where we measure the oxygen uptake because when you burn calories you use oxygen and you produce carbon dioxide so when we measure the oxygen uptake we can calculate how many calories you burn a day."
    
Every ones metabolism is different and the test will let the doctor know how many calories a day you should ingest.
Kathy is on a 1500 calorie diet and lost 19 pounds her first month.
    
She's been doing the diet for two months and now weighs 279 pounds.. she says she's never felt better.

"It's something to do with your confidence I feel like if I can do this maybe I can do this. I just have a better feeling about myself."
