Many doctors are still prescribing codeine for children despite safety concerns.
A new study published in the Journal Pediatrics shows that codeine prescriptions were given in about 3 % of kids' ER visits in 2010 amounting to more than half a million visits.
   
The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended against prescribing codeine to children.
   
They say the drug doesn't work for many children and may be fatal to some.
