Now to some new rules for airline pilots
The FAA will soon start targeting obese pilots and air traffic controllers -- and treating them for possible sleep problems tied to their weight.

It's all designed to make our skies safer
Obesity... We've called it a national epidemic, occasionally a problem in an aircraft cabin. In the movie "Why did I get married."

Maam. I'm going to have to ask you to deplane please
Actor Director Kevin Smith..who calls himself "way fat".. was asked to get off a plane.

But this morning the FAA is worried about obese pilots because their weight could cause apnea leaving them tired.

Dr.Gholham Motamedi      Obstructive sleep apnea in obese patients is a common condition, and it results in lack of enough sleep or quality sleep. As a result they remain sleepy during the day.

That's what happened 5 years ago on a "Go Airlines" flight between islands in Hawaii.  But both pilots fell asleep and overshot the runway before waking and landing.

The captain according to the NTSB was later diagnosed with apnea and was obese.
This is about passenger safety.

Ganyard: It really has the same physiological effects as drinking. And so you don't want a drunk pilot flying your airplane any more than you would want a pilot who hasn't had appropriate sleep flying your airplane

The FAA flight surgeon says obese pilots will have to see a sleep
Specialist  if diagnosed they will need treatment before being cleared to work

The FAA is starting with pilots with a body mass index of 40 but  plans to lower that to 30..soon.
  What does that mean?

A 6 foot man with a 40 BIM would weigh nearly 300 pounds.
And at a 30 BIM that same man would weigh 220 pounds.

Lanyard ;   I think pilots will embrace it.  Pilots don't want to make mistakes.
it's not just pilots but also air traffic controllers as many as 5,000 might fall under the soon to be release guidelines.
