HEALTH NEWS: New diet pill seems to help people lose weight

Updated: Tuesday, November 19 2013, 08:02 PM CST
There's a new diet pill that seems to be helping people shed those unwanted pounds including singer Christina Aguilera.

This was Christina Aguilera 2 years ago on the Voice, and during a performance at the American Music Awards.

Now, Christina is looking better than ever. According to her blog, it's because of Garcinia Cambogia.

The pills are a Tamarind plant extract from South Asia and Mexico.

Sara Gwathmey says, "It controls your appetite. It kind of suppresses it. And that was like "bingo!" that's what I need."
She says she heard about the pills on TV. She wanted to get off blood pressure and cholesterol meds and thought why not?

Sara says, "She had lost some weight and hey, why can't I too? I've tried everything else."

She has been taking Garcinia Cambogia for a few weeks.
And now when she steps on the scale??....
Sara Gwathmey says, "It's like 3 pounds at first, then it was like 6 pounds and then 9 pounds."

13 pounds so far! She takes 2 pills a half hour before each meal.
She says it's different than most diet pills she's tried.
"The major thing that I've noticed, as far as for me, is just that uhm, it takes away my hunger."

That's because it's a natural appetite suppressant, according to Nutritionist Dr. Beth Senne Duff.
Beth Senne-Duff/Associate Professor of Nutrition says, "It does cut appetite. It suppresses appetite so people aren't going to feel as hungry. And of course if you don't feel as hungry, you're probably going to eat a little bit less. "

The University of the Incarnate Word Professor explains how they work.
"They're burning a little more fat and so that helps, especially in terms of abdominal fat."

So, by storing less fat, you could notice the difference in your tummy.
Sara is realistic and doesn't believe there is a magic pill.

"If it would help me at least get over the hump of at least getting on a better eating plan, and making better choices, then I figured it was worth it."

Sara's hoping that will help her reach those weight loss goals one pill at a time.
